I don't think De Gea was going to sign a new contract no matter what we offered. I'm not sure how true it is, but the Guardian (which is more reliable than the majority of papers) stated that De Gea had been offered a contract of 200K a week by us and it would have been backdated to the start of last season, which is major money as he is on a low salary. He could easily have done a Ronaldo and signed that, and then gone to Madrid for a world record GK fee in a year or two. The fact that he didn't sign (if that story is true) means there's no way it's about money, he was always going to leave us.
Sadly I think DDG is behaving like a tool. United spent big money on him when he was a prospect. He flapped his way through his first season but United stuck by him. The least he could do is sign a short term contract ie 2 years to ensure United get at least their money back. Poor.
