Also scour the lower leagues, didn't we already have the best in the two leagues last season? Some want players, then they get ones that they say are no better than we already have . Now we are going for someone IMO better than Agard and Wilbraham now that's not good enough.
'We should scour the lower divs for the best defender and midfield destroyer available there' We also got Smith and Freeman from the lower divisions. and its 3 games. I know its the pisspot cup, but getting beaten 3-1 by Luton was a bigger shock than the other 2, and did illustrate further where our weaknesses lie. Also, when down to 10 men we were hampered by the options coming off the bench, highlighting our lack of depth in the squad. Fact is, Flint, Pack and Williams are not playing to their best, which is a surprise considering this should be a crazy buzz for them (i.e. playing a league higher). I feel that it has less to do with the Championship and more to do with the preparation (another surprise). However you are right in that the season has only just begun, and I back Cotterill to sort the troops out in style
Please Carling Cup you're having a laugh I'm surprised we scored a goal. Anyone who takes that result seriously needs to look at themselves
It highlights the form of the players, does it not ? Or maybe you're right. We don't have any problems and will be pushing for the play-offs by March with the current squad of 10 or so… Glad we sorted that out !
Where have I said we aren't going to get any more signings, in fact I'm convinced we will even if we get Gray on board. I'm just not panicking about it
Well i'm sorry but I have been panicking about it since early July, and surprised by a lack of urgency by the club since the end of last season. My feelings on this have been born out by comments by Cotterill recently, when he expressed regret that 'politics' prevented a repeat of his transfer deals last summer. And now I am fuming that we are seeing the result, as is Cotterill (which is fairly obvious). It is also obvious that this will now cost us a packet in overpriced players, when we could possibly have landed a great selection right across the team back in May/June for the same amount as one striker now. Me and politics don't mix
If we had bought in May and June it would have been someone else's cast off or we would have to pay over the odds to prise a quality player away from a reluctant seller. We don't know what this deal is for, it's all speculation but if we are after quality players we need to patient as clubs won't sell them until they have to and/or they have plan to replace them. It's just unfortunate that the window shuts after the season starts
One thing i do sence is SC is pissed right off. Unless signings are made and quick,i reckon he would have walked.
If the fee is an upfront £6 Mill with a further £3 Mill if we reach the Prem then that is not so bad. Certainly better than paying an up front £6 Mill+ for Gayle and losing the Bolaise sell on fee (likely to be in the region of £ 1-2 Mill).
sell on fee's? likely to be 10 or 15%, worth £30million? so likely £3-4million £40 million £4-5 million
Yes. 1998-1999 season under Benny. There was a crazy stage where we were Joint top scorers in all 4 leagues with Arsenal and yet bottom of what was the Championship. We were losing games 4-3 all the time. Wasnt Akinbiye the 'Panic-bye' for us back then? Or was it Soren Andersson?
"Anyone remember the season after Shaun Taylor retired. We spent all our money on strikers and patched up a defence. We got relegated." Selective memory again.. we actually spent lots of money on Sean Dyche who was highly rated at the time (who flopped badly!) and Vilmos Seebok who was captain of Hungary? and also highly rated. As I remember Sean Dyche had a stinking debut and was then universally slated by our fans and hence lost all his confidence almost completely.. par for the course really!
Was that the same season when we played Sunderland away. It was on TV and we were 1-0 after about 5 mins. We should have been about 10-0 down near the end and hardly got the ball into their half all game. 3 mins from the end Anderson hit a screamer from about 40 yards right into the top corner of the net. The most fortunate 1-1 draw I ever witnessed. That season I also seem to remember that we scored well but the defence often let in more, hence our immediate return to League 1.
In fact, Sean Dyche signed the season before (when we got promoted), and Vilmos Sebok was signed half way through the relegation season (98/99). The three defenders we signed that season were Sebok and Tistimetanu (in December) and Julian Watts at the start of the season. I vividly remember that game as it was the first time I ever saw City on Sky! Pretty sure Andersen's goal was only from around 20-25 yards but it was still a screamer. Didn't Welch save a penalty as well?
Maybe I did colour it a bit!, got a feeling that he did save a penalty. The woodwork took a bit of treatment too if I remember
