Worries me slightly, as this is clearly a panic buy, which sends out a terrible message. Not only that, but we need 3 more players, particularly in centre mid and defence; once we've bought those, our spending could be bordering on £15m! For that money, the only way we'd not look completely daft as a club is if we got promoted, which is not happening this year. I don't think we're going to go down so there's not a massive risk and we must have other targets; I'd rather get an established striker in on loan and spend 2 or 3 mil on 1 more young or foreign striker who could well prove to be a bargain.
Ridiculous fee, but hopefully will add value. Clearly a good striker based on what I saw on Saturday. Do need a CM and defender as well.
We were at this stage a few days ago with Gayle. Next week's exclusive: Man Utd accept £100m bid from Bristol City for Wayne Rooney - he's discussing personal terms now.......... but Cotts still hasn't met him......
Quite flattering when you think that he would choose us where he can stay in the championship with a club that made the pay offs last year. I guess there must be a tasty pay rise included?
Don't like this, not at all, seems like panic/desperation. I'd rather we concentrated on Midfield and Defence (imagine the quality we'd get if we'd spent 4.5m for each! Use the load market to cover injuries etc... But then I'm not an experienced football manager
I'm gonna keep my powder dry on this one for the moment.. Pack, who I really liked in league one has not protected the back 3 in the manner he should have so far, the championship may be beyond him and we definitely need quality cover there!
Quite agree there- He did well at the end of last season, but I do think the championship is maybe a step up too far for him.- Need an experience campaigner, just like |Wade Elliott was for us
My thoughts are very mixed and confused as this came right out of left field for me. Proof/pudding comes to mind and if it does come to pass then so be it, but have we now set out our high priced stall in the wrong market and at the wrong time? Time alone will tell.
Anyone remember the season after Shaun Taylor retired. We spent all our money on strikers and patched up a defence. We got relegated. I really hope the mis-management of pre season signings doesn't come home to roost.
Got more chance of midfielders and Defenders in the loan market than good forwards. He didn't look anything special on Saturday until he showed us his pace on their first goal and then his finishing on his goal. Fingers crossed he might turn out a expensive version of Andy / Andrew Cole for us or even better a super Bob imagine that.
The other things is Hull thought he was worth chasing, so it's not as if he's not valued by other clubs. And perhaps our defence looked dodgy trying to keep him out??
Not a panic buy seeing he was always our main target we just baulked at the 7mil asking price and switched to Gayle. When he knocked us back we went back in for Gray and if it is the reported 6mil plus 3 extra if we get promoted would seem to be a good bit of business also. I think it's naive of people to think that there won't be further additions either
We should scour the lower divs for the best defender and midfield destroyer available there. They don't have to cost 10 million - we are not Premiership (and some might say we aren't even Championship, based upon the season's start). Many of us on here were making a noise about the lack of business pre-season, and are sadly being proved right with the glaring short-comings on show. However I can't help but think the form of many of our players (Flint, Williams, Pack) isn't what it should be going into a season in the Championship.
yep RoD I think that's the point in a financial aspect, signing on fees don't come into FFP. Unfortunately fees in footy today is bloody ridiculous , so we have to pay higher prices for players because that's the current market. I think Cotts has already said he wants a CM and defender too!
Scour the lower divisions but you just said that the players we have got, many from the lower divisions are not performing although how you can say that after two league games one of which we had 10 men for most of it is beyond me
