Yeah, Shiznitz were good. Danny Landau was a bit of a controversial choice, because he isn't remotely "folk" (despite having an outstading folk fiddler in his band), but I picked him because he gets a crowd "up" and also guarantees to bring a good few punters along. Not entirely my cup of tea, but the lad's go so much talent and energy that he's always good to watch.

Can't say I noticed the cold though; cider kept me warm!

What type of hats were Party assaulting these bands with? I'd guess at knitted woolen ones if he was keeping in folk character, but was he throwing fedoras around in some post modern hip hop statement??

Wow really? You join in a little bit of lighthearted banter with that?

You need help. Or a break from the forum. Or both.

As you joined in a bit of light hearted banter when someone made fun of an error by yourself and you called them a ****?

You are the one needing help. Or an irony bypass operation reversal.

They were very crisp, tight and light.

I agree they weren't folk, which is much less of a big sound, but they felt to me basically like a dramatic, far too well-oiled pop group. I like my music more rugged.

I think they could do very well for themselves, they have a commercial sound, they clearly play very well, and they have a handsome bearded singer - ideal for following in the footsteps of Scouting For Girls or something like that. It's just not up my street at all.

Also, at one point, the singer (Mr Landau, I presume) said something along the lines of "Wow, what a lovely part of Hull" as if

    a) he'd never been there before and
    b) it was a surprise.

He said it in a Hull accent as well, so I immediately pinned him down as an East Riding villager type who'd shunned the city, choosing instead ignorance, and I had to force my right arm not to throw my plastic glass at him whilst shouting "**** off".

I restrained myself, and drank it instead.

My girlfriend loved them, on the other hand.

Why would an East Riding villager type have a Hull accent? Do people on Longhill and down Hessle Road have East Yorkshire village Accents? We need to know.

A local regional accent then, to Hull and its near surroundings.

He's a proper Hull lad. Actually steeped in folk music, too - he is part of the Raw family (including Alan Raw), who have always been at the forefront of folk music in this area.

I agree with your earlier comments, though. Very commercial and slick. It's pop music, really.

The people who sing in the Hillbilly Troupe are normally in Minerva at weekends, singing away in the back room.

I was nodding along to their version of Lovecats a while back as I smashed in a mixed grill (fish & chips for the 'gf').
