Bristol City have agreed a fee with Brentford for striker Andre Gray.

The newly-promoted Robins are searching for a proven goalscorer to aid their ambitious bid to become Championship promotion contenders.

Steve Cotterill had made Dwight Gayle his top target but the Crystal Palace hitman rejected the chance to move to Ashton Gate.

Now Cotterill has turned his attention to Brentford’s Gray and is hopeful of concluding a deal.

Gray fired 18 goals last season for the Bees following a £500,000 switch from Luton Town and has been the subject of interest from Hull.

West Ham have also been linked with the 24-year-old in recent days as Slaven Bilic looks to boost his attacking options.

However, it is Bristol City who are now leading the chase after slapping in a bid believed to be around £8million.

Gray still has two years remaining on his contract at Griffin Park and Brentford had been ready to offer the former Shrewsbury Town man a new deal.

But City's offer has proved too tempting to turn down and Brentford have cleared Gray for talks with their Championship rivals.

Good luck to him and Bristol City, no point getting all winey and moaning about it

If we had wanted him for £8m we would of done the deal , Bristol where prepared to pay way over the odds for what he is worth , so now fingered crossed he repays them there massive risk

No that is what happens when the owner does not want to give you all anything else.

Fine, it's his choice, he can't get his money back without promotion, but it's his money.

    Ha ha , fingers crossed

What's the point of getting all flappy about a player we thought was over priced , so said no thanks at that price

Well done Steve Bruce for sticking to his guns and not getting shafted just because we have just come down with prem money

I don't think he's overpriced, I think he's priced at exactly the amount you'd expect for one of the best strikers in the league.

Gray, Gayle, or Hooper would all cost about the same, Rhodes, McCormack or Afobe would be considerably more.

Agreed. And if i was holding the purse strings I wouldn't sign another striker while we still have a strikeforce costing £17m and earning £60k a week on our hands. We really do need to shift one before we spend big....

I have a feeling that Steve Bruce had little to do with us not getting him.

    Our owners can't win

They have to draw a line somewhere and I still maintain they expected a striker out the door when they started these negotiations.
Can't get stuck with more wages on top of what we have.

And no one seems to have added the lad still has to agree terms.
We could bid 15 million and then offer him peanuts knowing the whole thing was a waste of time.

Still room for all sorts to happen but I can't see us stepping in until we shift one. Which may be too late?

However, I don't believe Gray will sign for Bristol, that truly is a step backwards, this year anyway, especially when he is being touted around bigger clubs

We shifted N'doye. So we have Akpom, Hernandez and Jelavic. We still need another striker

The Allams will just have to match it and let the player decide...just down to wages and chances of promotion after that....we offer the best option on both

Steve Bruce is playing a scary game, but could save us a fair few quid

He is risking Jelly and Abel stays and the window slams shut , then the 2 lads are gonna have to score goals to get a decent move in Jan

This is all show boating by Bristol City they don't have that sort of money ffs. Don't let that stop the hissy fitters though.

He wouldn't want to go there anyway.
