I don't necessarily think it's utter rubbish. We feel like a team settling into a new skin and playing the wrong formation. Sometimes as well you have to hold your hands up when someone like Lukaku decides to play like he is.

A bit rubbish, yes, but resolvable by bringing on Oriol (or someone like that) probably for Davis. I'd have J-Rod on for Long too.

 

Can't say this has been unexpected, writing has been on the wall for some time now.

 

Strengthen up the midfield, early goal second half....who knows.

 

Really? I think that would result in us being exactly the same. We need 3 CM's in there. Oriol/Reed/JWP to come on, but it HAS to be for Tadic or Long. The 2 subs you mention are both like for like and won't change any of the problems we've just watched imo.

Yep formation is wrong, need another central midfielder on, last year we had wanyama schneids and davis and it worked well, Koeman needs to make the change.

The injuries don't help either. It's a shame Clasie got reinjured in the U21 game, though as others said Romeu might well be a good idea in the second half.

Saw a few people on other club's forums saying "what happened to that lauded Saints defense from last season?" but our defense is decimated with injuries and players that aren't here any more this season, so it's not really surprising the defense is a bit suspect. The only way is up, anyway.

In my inexpert opinion, I think Targett's looked decent today after everyone said he was awful last game.

Looks like Targett is coming off again. I feel sorry for him as he gets no protection so gets made to look bad. He then gets moaned at when it isn't all his fault.

It's not only Morgan, is it? From the back six from last season, only Fonte and Wanyama are there. It's a big change.

I think Morgan is a massive miss. A lot of the play they're starting is being generated by wide open spaces in the midfield they're powering into. Precisely the areas that were covered by Morgan so effectively last year. As has been said though, that's a lot to do with the formation too.

Not sure how it's solely his fault? He's not having the greatest of games, but it's the midfield that's the issue here.

 

Schneiderlin was very important, but don't forget the only person from last season's defense playing is Fonte. (Edit: and Wanyama.) (I suppose you could say Yoshida too though he wasn't a regular starter.) They might not be as big an influence as Schneiderlin, but their presence not being here is being felt too. With a goalkeeper out long term injured, left back out after an operation, new right back, and being an injury away from a CB crisis what with Gardos being out long term injured too it's no real surprise there's an issue.

...Mostly, it just makes me remember that people who don't follow other teams closely (and nobody follows other teams as closely as their own) won't know a lot of this stuff so wonder what's going on.
