They voted on a question that hadn't been asked in a way that wouldn't be used for any review of boundaries or shared resources and helped Parnaby piss away their money in the process.
Aye, Withernsea and Hornsea often debate their shared heritage and connections with York. It needs to be viewed, not from a fear of being linked to Hull (Hull politicians would likely be the biggest losers in any boundary changes) but from what can be gained by joint working. The anti-Hull snobbery holds us back. Looking at the roads alone, if Hull didn't exist, it's unlikely anyone would be in a rush to link Ferriby to anywhere at all.
You mean the vote with no proper debate or consultation, which only one side took seriously. Wasting council tax in the process.
Is that bridge near the one in Lincolnshire that Hull paid the lions share of and chairs the board of? I hope the people of Barton appreciate it, it's not a lot of use to us in Hull.
I think the cost was shared throughout the whole Himber region Thats why it took so long to come to an agrerment over reducing the toll
Things could be very significantly improved simply by combining reporting figures (for league tables etc) for Hull and the East Riding and combing services to save duplicating costs, there's really no need to go further than that.
I agree entirely.....money could be saved by combining/closer working in Tourism, Highways, Leisure, Payroll, Benefits etc.....after all under the partnership ERYC used to have they did manage many other Payrolls (& still do).....better integration of systems could be helped by using at least the same software systems.....more integration when purchasing products or services would also save money. There is no need to change the political structures or boundaries. According to the LGA the annual grant settlement for Hull could be reduced with enlarged boundaries as they would potentially lose the allowances they receive for being an inner city authority (Hull currently receives more than the entire East Riding)
It was largely that which was being considered when Parnaby had a brain fart and some in the east riding liked the smell and praised him for spungking their money away on a totally pointless vote. What's delaying it, is Parnaby and ERYC refusing to sit around the table and discuss ways to promote growth in the region. The East Riding could gain from joint working. It seems to be ignorance and snobbery that's holding it back. The selective use of figures for funding is misleading. Tax avoidance and farming subsidies alone probaby blow any income Hull gets into a cocked hat, plus many in the east riding gain from the facilities that exist primarily because of Hull.
You have a bee in your bonnet about farming subsidies. Doubt if you would be interested in putting in the necessary hours for the rewards most farmers get. Of course no one in Hull uses any of the facilities in the East Riding, do they? The small minded, insular attitude of so many in Hull is one reason it lags behind other cities.
I don't have a bee in my bonnet at all. It's just one of a number of examples to show how others are being selective with figures. Some of you seem desperate to try to show the City of Hull as lousy and irrelevant. Maybe it's just a trait of some in the East Riding. I'm just responding. Hardly my fault if some get all precious about it.
I don't try and show the city of Hull as lousy and irrelevant. In fact my wife was rather annoyed when we were on holiday in Dorset and I got stroppy with someone I overheard making a disparaging remark about Hull and gave them the full most bombed city, let down by successive governments, a place where there is one of the highest levels of students staying after they complete uni, it's place in history regarding it having the largest armoury outside London leading to the king wanting to enter and being refused entry setting off the civil war routine. Trouble with Hull is a lot of residents do themselves and the city no favours with their parochial, small town attitude and a sense of self pity which is rivalling that of Liverpool.
From where I'm sat, the small town, self pity, parochial attitude seems to stem more from those in the East Riding who seem to have an almost schizophrenic approach to the City, defending it and dragging it down on equal measure, yet denying the benefits they gain from Hull existing. Have a read, I'm not the one playing the pity card, I'm proud of the City and it's people. It's some of those in what are really the suburbs that need to broaden their thinking and their minds.
Its, DMD, its. Can you tell me what benefits I get from Hull existing? Other than it has the football team there that I support. Which is nothing against Hull. The same applies everywhere else.
I was born in Hull, lived there until my mid 20's & only moved away due to jobs.....but having lived all round the UK & in Europe for a short time when I returned to the area I found a City which had been let down by successive local councils rather than by central government. A City which became hated by many of those in the surrounding counties when Humberside County Council existed....a time when a disproportionate amount of LA funds were channelled into the City but with no clear benefits......a City which seemed to have wasted the millions it gained through the flotation of Kingston Communications..... I returned to an area where the City seemed to have stood still.....while other similar Cities had moved on drastically....not the fault of the people of the City, but a fault of those elected to work in it's best interests... I do not put the City down when I'm out of the area, I tell people I was born in Hull......I do have issues with those who try to blame others for the woes of Hull......decades of poor leadership mean that I do not ever want to live in an area managed by the same clowns .... ERYC is far from perfect but I would choose them to administer the services of the place I live every day of the week Since moving back to the area I think I'm safe to say that other than coming in to watch Hull City there isn't a single facility provided by HCC which I have used......even with my back I was in hospital in Sheffield/York....I don't shop in Hull, I don't use leisure facilities in Hull, I don't visit galleries/museums in Hull....so please tell me what Hull provides which I use
What benefits do we gain from Hull exactly? it's more the other way around Hull benifit from Eastriding folk spending their cash in what few shops are left in the City.
I am still awaiting a reply on that one. Maybe it is such a long list of benefits it is taking time to compile.
