The trawler is open Wednesdays and Saturdays. Go to the nearby gift shop to sign up for a tour. We also found it very interesting and our guide was excellent and very knowledgable.

And in winter it'll freeze over, and then we'll have an ice rink and pool job done

I was round there myself last weekend. The potential is staggering but to make it work it needs a lot of people living in the city with money to spend and a lot of quality businesses wanting to set up there and sadly I don't see either of those 2 criteria being achievable. It wasn't too pleasant tripping over people drinking cans of cheap lager at 8 in the morning either, but that's another topic...

Why the fuss? It is only history and history is not important. It is now and the future that counts. Or so the few pro name change apologists say.

The remains of the wall needn't be lost when the goth pit is filled in, the best section could quite easily be cut out and preserved at ground level for a small tourist feature about our key role at the start of the civil war. If we could move Wilberforce's statue to the other end of Queens Gardens 50 years ago we can lift a few bricks 10 ft up now.

there was a mock-up of the gate well over a hundred yrs ago at the entrance to Whitefriargate , building a replica (of original build) of the gate over the current bricks would be a far better idea and has been done all over the world without destroying old remains - hell half of the historic sites of Europe are rebuilds after WW2 . Cant we just get a bit creative ONCE !

The 'Pit' if you like although historically significant has been abused from the word go, OLM has already mentioned the litter but I remember seeing kids skatboarding over the old walls and it has never looked to have been kept tidy from day one. I think that big old TV needs to be brought out of mothballs and a video shown of what the old city was like inside of the wall that encompassed the Beverley Gate, a historical montage if you like. Video screens have been a feature of cities for years, New York, London, Tokyo to name a few even if most of them are used as advert boards some do show news and tv programmes, even share prices for those of that ilk. A bit of that £25 million could be used to make a historical video of Hull from way back to the present day, a proper proffessional video that could be shown near 'The Pit' and copies on sale if you want, water spouts in the ground are old hat these days anyway.

They could incorporate the water spouts as a nod to the future. <ok>

Me and my lad were killing a bit of time so we went to queens gardens for a walk, I couldn't believe what a f'king **** hole it looked! They've put the toad in there but not bothered to remove all the cans, paper bags and all sorts else beforehand. I told the lad that we used to be able to see the fish but not anymore! It looks like they've put some sort of green dye in there but you couldn't see a thing.

The rubbish thing has even affected what was once hallowed grounds that no one used to venture on to, the circular garden areas around the fountain. Now the place is littered with youngsters who lay about all over the grass on a nice day then when they have have gone leave a pile of rubbish strewn over the grass and flower beds. The care taken by the the council garden people has produced beautiful flowers beds year after year only now to be spoilt by the layabouts who desicrate the area.

Can they not lift the wall remains so they are at the current ground level, then preserve them? Keeping them is absolutely the right thing to do, we lost enough of the interesting architecture in WW2. At least it would stop the pit becoming a giant bin/skate park/dosser habitat. At (current) street level it would at least be at eye level and may attract more interest. At present most people just wander past it without giving it a seconds thought.

I'm no doubt a lone voice, but I think it's wrong to make the derogatory remarks about the youths that are using the hole at the minute.

I don't think it's a bad spot for them, nor a bad use of the hole. They're out of anyone else's way but too visible to be up to no good. Maybe we should be encouraging sub-culture and youth fashion, rather than sounding like your parents.

Nurture it, and it could become a tourist attraction in it's own right.

That depends on whether you want to recognise one of Hull's most historic sites as a tourist attraction, or you want a skate park.

Not really, they can both co-exist to broaden the appeal. The younger ones are paying more attention to the historic wall than most others seem to be, and most of the younger ones using it are not skateboarders.
