Rose-Tinted specs time! Just had a quick wikipedia sesh

Akpo scored 6 in 15 for Hibs since January - I personally would have kept him (at the time...)

Pawel Abbott has yet to score for his new club

Dave Mooney is now on a free after being released by Reading yet scored 14 goals for Colchester l'annee derniere - Would have been second top scorer for us I believe?

I personally always rated Mooney - clever, intelligent link up play...

I realise that last comment disregards any worth to any future comment I may write...

Lloyd Sam had a promising injury hit season at Leeds too

Anybody know how Chris Dickson coped in Cyprus??

Scoring goals- but it's a lower level than the Blue Square.

I agree re Akpo. He was often called lazy but I always saw him closing down goalkeepers/defenders. Bought something different to the team.

Yeah, you certainly lost me there as well. Akpo is apparently seriously injured now, I believe.
Frankly Abbott would have scored in the SPL, so Akpo's record ain't fantastic.

In all fairness Mooney is a similar player to Benno - save for Benson's natural goal threat... I just never understood why he got so much stick

It is interesting that a fair few of our recent oldies came with strong reputations and failed (Abbott, Francis, Mccormack, Andy Gray, Izzy Macleod, Doc to name but a few...)

A lot of our failures then go and revive their careers oddly too (Varney in particular)

To be fair, the vast majority of our failures end up as failures... even Varney hardly set the footballing world alight last year, that one goal from the left aside.

I never understood why Francis got as much stick as he did to be honest.

Probably because he is a crap defender. I dont agree booing our players irrespective of how bad they are playing. Its counter productive and does'nt help any of the players.

To be honest, I only mentioned Francis to get in with the regulars after my David Mooney Prince Philip moment... I think Francis could yet prove smashing perhaps!

Bit harsh on Francis TBH not half as bad as painted suffered coming after Richardson.

Francis' crossing can be fantastic. If he could improve certain aspects of his game he'd be a decent player.

But will that happen with us?

Francis' main problem was that he wasn't Richardson

    Big shoes to fill

    .

I beg to differ Dick... Imo Francis's main problem is that he is absolute and complete cack...!!

Some of the stuff I've read about him on here has left me wondering if we have some other fella in the squad who goes by the same name!!

I've seen nothing of his alleged Beckham esque crossing ability that people have been banging on about. For me he's slow, can't tackle, turns like the QE2, is no good in the air and is weak... The sooner he's on his bike the better!

I want a RB who is an out and out defender first and foremost. With Green a shoe in to play at RM, whoever's playing behind him at RB needs to excel defensively to allow Green the freedom to get forward at will to make things happen...

Is Francis the man for the job...? No

If you think the Francis comments are OTT over on the Arsenal board they are saying jenkinson is gonna be the best right back in the world...I thuink thats quite abit of an exageration.

I've found arsenal fans think any young player they get to be awesome, but some in my work have been banging on about him even getting Prem football this season his that good...before I bring them back down to earth lol

Of the little of Francis I've seen, yes he can cross the ball, but he isn't great at defending imo

The trouble is Mike... Jenkinson is 19 so can only get better and improve with the right coaching. Francis on the other hand is 26 and supposed to already be at the peak of his powers... how frightening is that...!!

Franco I agree 100% but Francis was always on a hiding to nothing

Even if he was twice the player he actually is he still wouldn't have been as good as Richardson

    Duff signing imo

I hear what you're saying Dick I really do... However, I can’t help but think it’s doing a bit of a disservice to a lot of Charlton fans who simply don't rate him because a) he isn't very good and b) he always looks completely disinterested.

I liked Richardson and like the vast majority of Charlton fans at the time thought that finding an equally good player to replace him on a shoestring budget was basically an impossible task. I was therefore prepared to suffer whoever came in just so long as they were half decent, put a shift in and showed signs of potential…

None of which apply in my humble opinion to Mr Francis…

Anyone who simply doesn’t rate him because he’s not Richardson is imo a narrow minded idiot. After all, we don’t exactly have a great tradition of signing players who are better their predecessors now do we…?

Francis took more stick than ge deserved. Think he could still offer us something, but it doesn't look like it was meant to be.

He wasn't good enough when we were a mid table team

If we are now a top 6 ... Even top 2 team then we need a new RB as we have added depth to every single area of the pitch apart from this sole position

I think he filled a gap last hear as he was cheap as chips
We're no longer shopping at Poundland so can get someone better
