    Pat Nevin

Ex-Scotland international on BBC Radio 5 live

"Daryl Janmaat does not make any contact towards defending the cross, and Shane Long stole in with a brilliant header.
"Ten minutes ago we talked about whether Newcastle would be getting nervous, having failed to put the match to bed. I wonder what Steve McClaren is thinking now about taking Papiss Cisse off. Aleksandar Mitrovic came on and has only done one thing so far - kicking an opponent."

Apart from laughing at your new signings, you lot look like you should be fine this season, provided you don't get crippled with injuries and suspensions <ok>

Mbemba looks like he could become absolutely class, his interception, breakaway and recovery speed is exceptional. However, Coloccini is a ****ing embarrassment. Awful performance today, sell ASAP.

Huge improvements on last season. We tired badly but given our pre season schedule and the travelling involved that was to be expected.

Wijnaldum was very good, we lost our way a bit when he went off. Mbemba has all the raw attributes to be top, top quality. Given his lack of game time pre season and it being his first game in a new league I was very impressed with him.

I'm proud of the lads today. We showed organisation, class and composure.
Cisse looked a different player and Gini is an absolute class apart. He's also a thoroughly lovely chapand officiially my favourite Toon player for lots of reasons outside of this game.
A ein would be nice but Saints are top 6 and on that basis it was a great start.
I have a feeling that now we have a coach who knows tactics we will improve.
    Keep the faith chaps.
I'm happy with our day's work.

Reading their matchday thread they are also very fair in their assessments too. Admitted they scored against the run of play and that we outplayed them first half.

I think Southampton will have another good season. Lots of exciting attacking options though didn't defend great today. Like us though (and everyone else) you can't judge their new players on one game.

Just got in from the game, and I would of taken that result all day before the kickoff
but, I'm wondering what does it take to get a penalty award
Pelle handballed the ball right in front of us <grr>
couldn't see Cisse's effort, but if it wasn't a foul, he should of been booked

overall I thought the ref's position on corners and free kicks was very poor
and in general let too much go in the first half where Southampton were content to kick anything

For me Colback was man of the match, the saving tackles, the mileage he put in plus he took a yellow for the team. Great game with end to end football, I look forward to the games to come when we have gelled a bit more. We also need a top class Central Defender and to have Colo on the bench, just saying.......... :)

Wasn't there today so don't know if this is accurate, but towards the end it sounded like the fans were getting impatient with us not getting forward quick enough. If that was the case then I think we also are in need of learning the new style. We either play hoofball or we don't. If it's good enough for the 20th minute then it should be good enough for the 89th.

Been a while since I've seen such a fluid Newcastle attacking in space, nor one as determined to press and win back the ball. Good luck for the rest of the year; hope the positives today are a sign of things to come.

Wouldn't despair too much about the defense, Haidara excluded...did a very good job of sniffing out and shutting down trouble for the first two-thirds of the match, beaten on two good (and not terribly easy) headers.
