I have a feeling that it's going to be a tight game. A lot of play in midfield with each side slowly getting into the swing of things. Chances will be few and far between for both teams with the team who takes their chance winning.

Taking everything into account I would go for a close 8-1 win to the Toon.

This is the only change would make to that lineup Tash

Reckon a 2-1 win for the Toon. Then again I've always been far to optimistic

    It's Match Day!!!!!

You know what I love about football? It doesn't matter if you're 5 or 45 - the start of the season manages to get you excited no matter how much your head tries to tell you that you're in for another 9 months of pain (is this what it's like to be pregnant?).

Despite all the threads about not having signed enough players, still having Willo in defence, still having a paper thin squad - I woke up this morning and I'm thinking we have a new manager, we're unbeaten so far this season, and anything is possible.

So, I'll enjoy the next hour before settling back into the harsh reality once the game gets under way!

I hope I'm wrong but I see this first game as a first defeat! Saints have already made a good start in Europe whilst we have had some embarrassing performances pre-season.
My main cause for concern is that we've not seen a proper team put out, just a mish mash of squad players.
On the squad front, our defence still looks a recipe for problems.
I'd take a draw, but hope that my pessimism is OTT, and we score a couple of crackers from the new Shearer!

Like the line up. Would have preferred Aarons to Obertan though.

The reality is that this is going to be a very hard game for us to be starting the season. SM has already admitted that we're behind schedule with our preparations (unavoidable really as it was the right thing for him to do to look at as many of the players as possible in pre-season if it really was a clean slate for everybody). Southampton had a Europa game on Thursday, but at this stage of the season that is probably an advantage in preparation and fitness.

The important thing is for us to not get carried away by the early results. We have a tough start. This season the aim has got to be to come out of it still in the Premier League and in a position to build for success. I think we're making steps in the right direction but it isn't going to be an overnight transformation.

True. I'm sure we'll see him in the last thirty, stretch tired legs. Loving that there's no willo or Saylor there
