Earlier this year I had a nasty twinge in me elbow, which ran all the way up to me shoulder blade. Couldn't grab owt with me left hand - doc suggested cortizone injections; trainer suggested lying on me back with a tennis ball (corki if yer have one) betwwen my shoulder blades, then rotate your left arm behind you touching the floor. It ****ing knacked, but after a while that side loosened up and low and behold, it functions fine.

A damn sight better than cortizone. i used to get a thai fitness massage everyweek in Prague - it was only about 20 quid for an hour. No happy finish stuff, just utter pain, esp when they worked the shins, calves and hip flexors. But boy did it keep the injuries away.

Lovely drive, lovely kippers, and a lovely castle at the end of it. According to the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, it started as a wooden fence, later replaced by a stone wall ... and look at it now. Obsolete but still wonderful.

Had some visitors from US some years ago and we approached Bamburh from the north and just as we came over a little hill out of the village there was a cricket match being played on the green below the castle. The visitor just said "Jesus Christ stop the car" and then took a series of photos from various positions while we parked up. He also said that if this wasn't England then nothing was. Photos turned out great apparently and he even had one turned into a huge painting at great expense.

Just found this topic, some good reading. I have done a lot of weight training over the years. The only supplement that I would say makes any real difference for me is creatine. Having said that it only makes a difference if your training to your full potential. As the original post says different things do work for different people.

The biggest difference you can make is how you train.

I see so many people at the gym cheating themselves. For instance not touching your chest with the bar on the bench press, not going to correct depth on squats.

If you want to get stronger fitter and look better, train hard, train smart and don't cheat. That includes taking PEDs which seem common place in many gyms these days.

i have loads of pics of the place too. from childhood til today. the road in from the north is the best as you don't know what's coming, then you get over the rise and wallop - getting the cricketing action shot a big bonus! canny golf course there n'all - tricky as hell with a north sea breeze....

I use creatine now and again, I prefer the powder to the capsules, but it's hard to get a decent powder that dissolves well. It's one of the few supplements you can actually feel working.

Bad form is also my pet hate, swinging dumb bells <doh>

If I was to give one piece of advice to any beginner it would be to train your legs as much as possible, more than any other muscle group, get all that testosterone out and it'll be great for core strength and stability which is the most important part to train in the gym for a healthy posture, despite what the 'arm monsters' think!

Always wanted to hit the weights properly. Not to become some beef cake but to perhaps bulk up a little bit. Only issue is, I never really know how to go about it. I've read Arnies book and read a bit about Rippeotes starting strength but I am none the wiser! Meh, I'll just drink beer and get fat <laugh>

The best way mate is to find a gym nearby with a decent personal trainer and tell them your goals. People online can give you pointers etc but it's difficult to explain good form using words, it's better to be shown. Well worth the investment and it'll serve as the foundation for your future fitness.

Or go cosy up to a tank in the gym and see if he'll teach you a thing or two!

There are 3 main lifts to master. Squat, Bench Press and Deadlift. These 3 lifts train the largest muscles in your body but also hit many of the secondary muscles too. If you only did those 3 exercises properly you would get bigger and stronger. For more info visit the British Drug Free Powerlifting website www.bdfpa.co.uk

    Fitness.

Why when this word is mentioned does most people think of gyms?

There are many more alternatives than being stuck inside with a load of sweaty posing people.

Simple things like walking. Running. Cycling. Swimming etc. A lot more enjoyable and a lot cheaper. Keep your money. Get outside.

Why does the word gym make you think of a bunch of sweaty people posing?

I go to two different gyms, both hand picked by me for being free of posers and waxed gimps.

I do agree mind, plenty to do outside, I did a load of gardening yesterday and that made me sweat like Adam Johnson at a Nativity play. Any exercise will work to burn calories, but you have to enjoy it to do it long term.

I'm being serious here, I've come so close to training outside using anything I can get my hands on. I want to measure myself with 6 months training in the gym against 6 months training outside. I've got a feeling I know which one will put me in better condition...

The only thing that has stopped me, is that I'll look like a dick weight training with natural materials outside on an open field or whatever. I shouldn't give a **** and would admire somebody else for doing it. I do get really self conscious with things like that though.

Adam Johnson at a nativity play. Haha.

Ok so maybe im stereotyping gyms. However they do attract more than a fair share of wannabe meathead cock jockeys. Surely you cant deny that.

It wouldn't be definitive though, every body works differently.

My mate is ripped to death, all he does is climbing, I'll never get that body weight training but I will never get it climbing either because I'm scared of heights.

I'd say environment is a secondary factor of how well something works. Getting good food and dedication are far more important.

They do yeah, go to Pure Gym and its crawling with wannabe hard man Asians who do bicep curls every day as stand in the mirror hoping to catch a glimpse of themselves with a pump.

Commercial chain gyms are full of pretty mummy's boys who do their hair before going to the gym, totally agree.
