I wouldn't want to be mersons wife tonight tbh. Pleased with Romero. He's been slammed from all angles but showed quality today. Composed too and for someone who's played as little football as him, it can only be a good thing.
Think he was a little reserved. In a few games he will have more confidence and push forward too. He made a few good interceptions and nicked the ball a few times. We didn't capitalise but with work, he should be very good. Herrera has to play, regardless of who else is in midfield. Speeds us up immensely and makes the opposition nervous. He doesn't give them a moments peace.
That was quite dull. Romero is a good shot stopper but he has that terrible South American habit of palming the ball back into the danger zone. He's not the answer if De Gea leaves. It was quite funny watching Schweiny telling everyone where to pass the ball.
Any good? Sounded a bit of a grind. Currently on a ferry to St Malo , off for some relaxation. Au revoir.
Nothing special but a deserved 3 points. Spurs had a good ten min spell in the first, probably should have scored. We didn't create an awful lot and didn't have a shot on target until the 64th minute but until the last few minutes, Spurs were no threat. Incidentally the scousers claim they would be disappointed to beat Stoke without playing like gods. Delusional as always.
He used to surge forward a lot more for us. It looked to me like he was doing what he was asked today and playing more defensively/keeping Eriksen under wraps. I don't think he needs to learn that, he needs to be told he's allowed to.
Exactly mate. And I agree I think this is what LVG asked him to do today, which is a waste. The trouble is it invites pressure as well as stunt our attacks. LVG just does not get pacy attacking football, or counterattacking football. Everything is either slow and cumbersome, or look for the hollywood pass to a runner.
It's because he's a high pressing, possession based manager. His version of a counter is to win the ball in the oppositions 3rd break forward. You could see it today but unfortunately it didn't work out. As we have both said, Herrera needs to play as he speeds up the midfield and can turn defence into attack. We don't need two DMs
Yeh I don't disagree with that tbh. Only problem is when we collect the ball in midfield. We're going to come up against better attacks, better midfields, than spurs. The feeelosofeee whenever we get the ball in midfield has to be go forward. Herrera has to start. I wouldnt play Young atm.
What a nervous ending! Thought Darmian and Smalling played well, not sure about the keeper, needs to work on his passing.
The game was dull and we didn't play too great. But if we keep it in context, we were playing Tottenham. That's a tough start if you ask me. And getting three points is all that matters in these kinds of encounters. Ironically, if it were Chelsea, analysts would have been "mark of a champion is when you get the points even when you're not playing well. Besides, it's too early. They will get better". Kinda like how Chelsea lost the charity shield and still got classed as the team to beat. Either way, this season is going to be tough.
Don't really care how we played, just happy we got the 3 points, in what looked a very tough opening fixture on paper. I think Schniederlins positioning today, had a lot to do with the respect we showed for Tottenham, who have a strong attack. I think well play with more freedom against lesser opposition. Was pleased with the keeper, he surprised me with how well he played. Good decision making and some nice saves
It's a bad decision because he will make Arsenal stronger but the Chavs still have the best back up keeper in the PL. Courtois is over rated though. He will become a top keeper but he is still an accident waiting to happen.
A good solid start to the season. Nothing more. This team looks more mobile and resilient than last season. The only weak point was the obvious GK position but then we all knew that and Romero got more confident with time. There is some solidity to the midfield. No surprise there. The defence needs to settle down once we get a permanent no 1. I am more optimistic with this team than I was last season. This team will get better and I think (fingers crossed) we can expect to beat most teams at OT.
They didn't have a choice. You can't keeper of Cech's quality on the bench. Selling him to Arsenal was pretty dumb though.
Yeh I agree with that. I was at United vs Spurs game in August 2007. Virtually the same affair. Hargreaves had just joined, playing next to Carrick. Very similar in that like Schneider he was the Box to Box but in that game was playing defensively just like Schneider was today. We didnt look like scoring until Nani scored a goal out of nowhere. A dull game and I think we got 4 pts in our first 3 games that season iirc. Went on to do the Prem and CL double. Not saying we're going to do that but you have to put season starts in context.
