But, according to our AMAZING government, I thought our economy was performing brilliantly compared to the rest of Europe!? I'm so confused. Surely our amazing economy should easily be able to support a few asylum seekers.

I dunno. I wish it was easy and we could just say "no, we're full up" or "yes, there's room". :emoticon-0112-wonde

Anyway, wait a minute, define "room" for me please. To ease my confusion.

One of the most overriding reasons IMO for closing the door is the strain put on our public services, police, NHS, schools etc.etc Hang on a minute though that's the Tories fault isn't it ? Nothing to do with the last Labour Government's open door policy to bring the votes in, that worked didn't it ?

Yes. Obviously the main pressure on the public services is immigrants. Sure it is.

Do you know what a demagogue is, KIO? If I was to describe Nigel Farage as one, would you agree?

Remind me someone, how many of our public-sector employees are immigrants again?

Any particular reason you've taken "England" as the area to measure of population density, and yet then talk about the UK?...

The most infamous I would have thought was Adolf Hitler, I hope you're not comparing me with him ? I am NOT racist for a start my points thus far are purely based on numbers and nothing else. It may surprise you to know that my daughter is to marry a half Angolan, half Brazilian immigrant and I'm married to a Yorkshire lass :emoticon-0102-bigsm

Erm... wow. I'm not sure how you managed to go off on that tangent, KIO!

As you rightly point out, demagogue =/= racist (necessarily). So don't worry, you can still buy into what a demagogue says without being racist.

OK, then your stat is incorrect - the UK's population density is quite considerably lower than the Netherlands' and Belgium's and about the same as Germany's

I don't necessarily buy into what anyone else says JK, I make up my own mind. To be perfectly honest there's no bloody point debating the matter any further because nothing is going to change, I despair at the apathy and willingness of the British people to accept all the bullshit thrown at them from politicians of whichever persuasion. <ok>

Wait, what? You despair at the apathy of the masses, but only after accepting that "there's no bloody point in debating the matter"?

I'm not sure I follow. But anyway, I'm going back to listening to the cricket.

No offence KIO mate, but it sounds to me a bit like you've made your mind up before wanting to critically think about the facts.

As shown by your stat above about the UK's population density, the media are twisting a specific presentation. Like the Telegraphs ludicrous claim that "non-EU migrants cost the UK £120bn due to Labour's immigration policies" - which omitted to mention that actually they were including the 90% of immigrants who immigrated pre-Blair, and disregarding all contributions made by those earlier immigrants.

So you can't say "there's no bloody point in debating the matter" when actually what you mean, given that you appear to have made your mind up before critically thinking about the facts is "I don't want to debate the matter because I've made my mind up". If you'd said that, I can't dispute it, but you can't pretend that your POV is based on the facts if when confronted with robust counterfacts you stick your fingers in your ears. <ok>

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. However, no-one is entitled to challenge somebody else's opinion unless they are prepared to back it up with facts and, if their facts are demonstrably weaker, accept that their opinion is wrong. I.e. either you hold an opinion quietly and disregard whether it's right or wrong, or you voice your opinion and accept that it might be wrong.

I appreciate your initial compliment Thurnby. Thank you.

Obviously I have 'hammed up' some of my posts today (largely for comedic effect, but I guess their amusement-factor is, in the end, subjective).

However, I don't see the issue with me posting that quote. I feel a great deal of empathy for those in Calais, seeking asylum. Frankly I am appalled at the lack of empathy shown in the press and elsewhere regarding their plight.

It's no different than CT dancing on someone's grave because they don't appear to have paid the correct amount of tax because they are related to Osama bin laden.

It's all crazy, from all view points!

Damn they didn't pay VAT etc, maybe??? But hey they are related to Bin laden so it's good they died in a tragic air accident. Oh and my house has gone up in value and I feel bad.
