Who sends our soldiers to their deaths? Why do people join the Armed Forces knowing full well that there is every chance they will be deployed to a war zone (part of the job remit I hear) and then whinge about all the unnecessary deaths? Unless they are brainless morons there is no excuse fir such stupidity.
It really is a difficult one. on the one hand one of the best things about this country is the diversity of the newspapers as they do cater for pretty much all tastes and allegiances. Of course freedom of the press is an important principle and one which, ideally should be protected. However, on the other hand there is a right to privacy and if the alleagtions of recent weeks are true then I think most people would agree that a line has been crossed. I personally hope that a fully independent inquiry can take place and, where, necessary, prosecitions instigated and anyone convcited of wrongdoing is bought to book. After that hopefully there can be some form of agreement about self regulation so that freedom of the press and the roght to privacy can both in some way be accommodated.
You're missing the point. The news of the screws hacked into peoples phones, it's against the law and in some of the cases morally reprehensible. So what are you discussing, soldiers going to war or freedom of the Press?

Freedom of the press is a vital concept in a democratic state but that freedom is inevitably going to be abused as it has been by the NOTW. What the media industry needs is tighter regulation by a body with the teeth to act when things like this happen.

And now we are faced with the stark reality that our press, the best in the world, are going to be regulated in a draconian manner, which is another signal of the erosion of our civil rights.
