The TV series passed through unnoticed a few weeks ago. :)

Brilliant. By the end I loved it. It was challenging at first though. I've rewatched it since and I'm saving it up for winter for another go.

And here's proof. I loved this song from the first moment I ever heard it and I loved it more and more as time passed. It became the song I listened to whenever I needed lifting. I told my firends about it. I'd listened to it for a good couple of years before I found out its back story.

    Here's the song:

And the backstory? I'll pop it in the next post, in the hope that you listen to the song before you find out.

OK, here goes: It was written following his 90 year old mother's murder in a burglary at her home (and his childhood home). How can something so beautiful (to me at least) come from something so awful?

Incoming Quick Rant: Middle-man recruitment agencies - aaarrrgggh. Just had to wrangle with one of their websites (which wouldn't upload my CV file), which resulted in me just cutting them out of the process and emailing the people at the publication I want to work with. It probably won't work. ****ing websites.

Most companies would rather a direct applicant than through an agent DTLW - I wouldn't worry. Saves them money and shows initiative. There is NO reason on earth you would need to go through an agency despite what they might tell you. Good ones will have decent relationships with hiring managers, but other than that, they'd rather avoid the fee.

Nice track Vin! Must say though, as a fusspot, I'd prefer his vocal solo to give it more depth and emotion, when you look at the subject matter. I think she lifts it that bit too much for me...

But then I guess that's the paradox of the track.

Given that the middleman's fee is in the region of 30% of annual salary, you may well be surprised how keen they are to talk directly.

And having been on the receiving end of agencies, I can tell you that your assumption (and mine before I knew) that they do something other than just pass on your CV is incorrect. That is literally all that 90% of them do.

True, although if you're getting charged at 30% you're getting seriously ripped off. Majority will do a job for 15.

It's more of an 'apply via our website and we'll pass it on'.

For what it's worth, I applied for a spot at FHM - I tried doing it through the middle-man - but it ****ed me about with trying to upload my CV. Instead, I emailed the editor and the chief writer with my CV, standout and covering letter, as well as other information.

I had to write a 'Final Countdown' piece (basically three bits of advice/recommendations on subject of my choice), too.

I decided to go for 'three things not to do when applying for work experience', and basically made light of the situation in a humorous and engaging way, in the hope it might impress them. Maybe they'll like that.

If not, maybe something else will come up! I've also got in touch directly with people at The Sun, The Sunday Times and a couple of agencies, as well as Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club. So maybe, something will materialise. Here's hoping...

Ha, it's not your problem. Something will materialise sooner rather than later, I hope!

At the end of second year there's an application process of people solely on my course to get to take a year out, working full-time for Arsenal Football Club in the media department, covering the senior team. For now, I'm trying to get ducks in line to give that a shot, if possible!

That's at the interview stage now. They never got back to me, and I didn't get offered an interview.

Perhaps, but even if she is lip syncing, she would have had to have sung it at some point, even if it was in a studio, and thus it would still be an emotional performance. I mean, considering she the tears she wept when she was just lip syncing (if she was), then surely actually performing the song would be quite emotional.

I listen to music from all eras, not just nowadays. Heck, one of my most played songs in recent months was San Francisco by Scott McKenzie and the Beatles is my 4th most played artists on Last.FM (behind the Killers, Owl City and Coldplay... and most of those Killers plays come from Exitlude). And trust me, I'm well aware that a lot of music nowadays isn't great. For example Skrillex and Justin Beiber, wtf is that?!

    I bloody hate Jessie J!

Not all the music I listen to is mainstream, for example Gotye, Of Monsters and Men, The Decemberists, Say Lou Lou, Sigur Ros, Lucy Spraggan, Blackmore's Night,.. they're fairly un-mainstream.

Yeah, they're pretty good, very good harmonies. My favourite song by them is Lady Lynda, but they also did a great cover of California Dreamin',
