Sky reckon we're going to make a move for Sammy Clingan. http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11688_7037607,00.html I have no idea about his ability but I know he's been holding championship midfields together for a while so you never know. What are your thoughts?
This is from a Cov fan forum: http://www.skybluestalk.co.uk/threads/9856-Leeds-make-bid-for-Clingan Seems a good wee player.
The fact he's 27,played his entire career in this country & none of us seem to have much idea what he's like speaks volumes. Surely if he was any good we'd have heard a lot more about him by now,& the fact he's an NI international means nothing. Not really the inspirational signing to get the place buzzing.
The Coventry fans are all saying he's their best player. I don't want "inspirational signings" I want good players who will improve the team.
With all due respect being Coventry's best player doesn't mean he's any good. You'd think playing in a poor Coventry side he'd stand out even more & we'd know who he is without the need for looking up facts about him. But we don't know what he's like,& if he was stand out good we would know by now. That's what I meant, perhaps I should rephrase it-it leaves me uninspired.
It's stupid to ignore the views of the people who do know about him because you've never heard of him and therefore assume he's ****.
He seems to be their best player but don,t worry Coventry fans BATES will offer peanuts for him they value him highly we value him at 500kif that remember SG HASN,T SIGNED A PLAYER FOR THIS MUCH BEFORE so Bates will have a stroke
Forest fans say he was poor for them in league 1, went down with norwich and been ok for a average coventry. If people are happy about signing this quailty of player, then mid table here we come. Do people want us to challenge or not, because we need better than this if we do
The point of signing players is to improve the team, not inspire the fans. Usually the 'inspirational signings' clubs make turn out to be crap players or be heavily overpriced. Just because we don't know who he is, doesn't make him a bad player.
Simon you're missing my point,we've all heard of him,I'm not saying he's ****,what worries me is that we have no idea if he's any good & if he was I think we'd know by now regardless of what Coventry fans say about him. He's been knocking around a few years so he's no new kid on the block. Strange that he's not better known to us.
He won promotion with Forest from League One, but turned down a new contract to stay there. So the coaching staff obviously rated him, which for me counts for more than the fans opinion. Yes he was relegated with Norwich, but so were a lot of their squad who just won promotion. Just because a player gets relegated, it doesn't make him bad. Most of our team that were relegated from the Championship, were actually good players. Anyway, we already have Brown and Howson, with potentially Nunez and Clayton, who will challenge him for a position. He's an improvement on Kilkenny and Johnson, so he could be a valuable squad member. I'd expect us to line up with Brown and Howson as a first choice centremids, so Clingan providing competition wouldn't be bad.
well we are lacking cover on the starboard bow. sorry. I'll get my coat. He's cov's best player, or one of them according to their fans. They played hoofball but were actually quite unlucky last season, they created stacks of chances but didn't have a finisher. There was very little between any of the teams in the championship, so i think its disingenuous to say 'he played for cov he must be rubbish'. Strikes me, that he's a decent player for this league and in his prime. Sure i'd like iniesta, but realistically, sounds like he'd be a decent addition to the squad... if not one to get overly excited about. Though frankly at the moment i'd be excited about signing a cheque.
No, inspirational signings almost always underwhelm. The Cov fans all think he's worth about £3m minimum but think he'll go for peanuts because they're right in the **** financially. If you do some digging there's actually an article from some NF fans a couple of years ago about how disappointed they were that he didn't sign a new contract.
