Cruise terminal and music/conference venue plans for Hull set for next step

THE city council is set to push ahead with two major development projects aimed at boosting Hull's economy.

Later this month cabinet councillors will be asked to approve the next steps towards creating a new riverside terminal for visiting cruise ships and building a new mixed-use entertainment and conference complex in the city centre.

Feasibility work on a new cruise terminal on the Humber has continued following the city's unsuccessful bid to secure the decommissioned Royal Navy aircraft carrier HMS Illustrious.

Those studies have not only confirmed two potential locations for the terminal – next to The Deep and near the entrance of Albert Dock, but also indicated the likely economic benefits to the region.

It is believed the feasibility research shows 40 per cent of the likely spend by visiting cruise ship passengers would take place in Hull while the remaining 60 per cent would benefit the immediate surrounding area.

It also confirms the potential for a significant new waterside development next to the terminal.

Similar terminals elsewhere in the UK feature shore-based shopping and leisure attractions within walking distance.

The city's cabinet will be asked to formally approve the procurement of a joint venture partner to deliver the project.

The partner would not only be expected to be able to bring funding to the table but also operate the terminal once it is built.

On its part, the council has initially identified just over £9m from its capital programme as a contribution towards the scheme.

However, council leaders are also believed to be ready to lobby for extra funding from the government through chancellor George Osborne's Northern Powerhouse devolution programme.

They believe that marketing the development as a cruise terminal for Yorkshire could help unlock additional funding from Whitehall.

Meanwhile, proposals first unveiled last year for a new live music and conference complex on land between the Princes Quay shopping centre and Ferensway are also gathering pace.

At the same cabinet meeting later this month councillors will be asked to enter into negotiations to appoint an operator for the venue.

The council has already committed £29.4m towards the cost of building the complex on what is a largely derelict site originally earmarked for an extension to the shopping centre.

As previously announced, Princes Quay's owners CIT have pledged to deliver a new hotel at the site as part of the overall scheme.

The Mail understands a well-known international chain has expressed an interest in becoming the hotel's operator.

A report for the cabinet meeting says: "The comprehensive redevelopment of a city centre site would create a long term legacy for the city beyond the UK City of Culture 2017 and contribute to the wider renewal of the area already underway with investment decisions linked to the city centre public realm and redevelopment of the Fruit Market.

"Investment decision to fund the delivery of a new music, entertainment and conference /exhibition venue would have significant economic benefits in terms of increased visitor numbers and spend."

    Cheers OLM.

This is great stuff. I go on many cruises and hate having to go to other cities to board the ship.
Only been on one cruise from Hull and that was so much easier.

    "a well known hotel operator".

Hilton Garden Inns have already got a hotel going up behind St. Stephens, so I'm not sure who the interested party here is. Maybe Campanile trying to expand their branding?

    Hello ,

Could you tell me if it is possible to send you PM, as I would like to ask you(OLM) a couple of questions about this subject and the City of Culture.
I am originally from Beverley and have followed the club from a distance for many years. I live in Montpellier.
    Many Thanks

Work by Sam Allon (demolitions) have begun on Midland Street , Hull. They've ripped the front of the building away & are gutting the interior. Can you find any recent photos OLM. Thanx.

Ask the board, you'll get a lot more answers.

NB Im not suggesting OLM wouldn't know the answers, he's our very own Tony off that history show in regards to Hull, and whilst he knows **** all about football, management or running a club, he's very much an expert on our glorious city.

I've not seen any more pictures since the one's of the roof coming off, that I posted a few days ago. I'm sure there's some out there, but I'm on my phone at the moment.

The suspicious in me thinks mmm 3 fires in derelict building just lately and all of a sudden the council is doing all it can to save the Lord Line building. Then the announcement of this terminal kind of smells of 'bury the bad news in the good type of thing', nothing happens for months then bingo good news but in the meantime 3 buildings that people have been on about for an age have gone up in smoke and good news about something else appears. Like I say mmmmm.

For the past 18-24 months, on and off in my spare time at weekends, I have been designing my own 'masterplan' for Hull:

The original idea to place the cruise terminal between The Deep and Victoria Dock was an awful idea.
I had written a piece in my masterplan about why the entrance to Albert Dock would be so much better suited. Not only is there land to be developed, the bullnose as the focal point of any development could look fantastic.

So, it's great to see they've re-thought their original plans.
