It depends what you aspire to be...some ManU fans seem happy to judge their club by the income that merchandise brings in. Not denying the value of having loadsa money, but how come they are still in debt.

The prices for these replica shirts and the fact that the kits are changed so regularly are the triumph of marketing bullshit, the margins along the chain must be huge, these things costs pennies to make. For those of you that have one, I genuinely hope you enjoy them, and am sure the players appreciate it as well; they probably think about it as they are filling up their Bentleys.

Anyone who buys a new shirt every year is (no offense) a complete idiot.

I buy a new shirt every year. Why does that make me an idiot?

Miserable git. Life's short, so do what makes you happy when you can. It makes me happy to wear my team's colours at the games. I'm fortunate enough to be able to afford to do it.

do you stand and think about the margin some bigwig is making and what car they may be driving for every purchase you make?

I'm in debt. I "own" a house. The owners of Ynited have a mortgage in their "house" so it's not much difference.

Because they're expensive, a waste of money, are generally only used for one year and you can just as easily represent/show your loyalty to your team with a shirt that's 2, 3, 5, 10 seasons old or older. If it's a particularly good kit then fair enough, but it would have to be a particularly good shirt for me to buy after having bought the previous season's shirt.

It's like people who buy Football Manager or Fifa every year. Especially with Fifa, the gameplay changes are so slight, it's basically buying the same game repeatedly. Unless they do something significantly different, for example I got Football Manager 2008 I think it was, then I got Football Manager 2009 only because it added a 3D engine which was quite a significant change.

Utter garbage. What you are doing is deciding how people should spend their money and making assumptions as to why they buy them. That's not your choice or decision and I think it's extremely rude to tell someone they're an idiot for choosing to decide to contribute in their small way to their clubs funds by purchasing a new shirt, should they so choose to do so. I like the way you describe something as a waste of money, simply because it is something you don't do or wouldn't do.

Tell me PL the last purchase you made and I'll tell you that you are an idiot for buying it, no matter what it is.

It pisses me off when people make such unfounded statements about people who buy football shirts. I buy one because I like to wear the current shirt to the games. I even wear it when I'm at home watching us on the television if an away game I can't attend is on.

I must have missed the new law passed that means I can't spend the money I earn on what I want. It actually makes me feel that I'm helping in a small way.

    My choice. Not yours.

Jeez calm down. Obviously it's your choice, I didn't say it wasn't, and you're free to spend your money however you wish but I personally just think it's a total waste of money to spend £40/50 on a shirt which you'll wear for one year then never wear it again, then buy another one and wear it for a year and so on. Then you have a bunch of old shirts just sitting around doing nothing, so what is the point? If I'm spending that much on a shirt, I want it to last. Hence why my 2008/09 season shirt I wore up until last season 14/15, and before that I had a 2003/05 shirt. If you can afford it, then fantastic, but even if I won the lottery, I'd still rarely buy shirts. I just don't believe in buying things for the sake of it...

Idiot was a bit of a strong word to use, I admit.

And my last purchase was some chicken and potato wedges.

Stop being reasonable, Fats. Doesn't belong on this forum....only outright prejudice allowed. :)

What a fantastic post, clearly providing an interesting and well-thought out contribution on the debate pertaining to the annual purchase of football shirts. Can you teach me how to write such insightful posts?

Woops, my mistake, I didn't realise you were referring to my purchase of chicken and potato wedges, I thought you meant my post as a whole. Sorry :emoticon-0111-blush

And chicken's nom. I might be an idiot, but at least I have good taste.

Just buy the shirt direct from Thailand, can get it under a tenner and it is the exact same you would get in JD/Sports Direct/Saints shop anyway.

I have over 100 shirts I think, some I have never worn, only wear them when I am training for my Saturday games or playing 5 aside, so 3 get worn a week. I am obviously a complete idiot for buying clothes that I will probably never wear
