The mobile van in the west hull villages is pretty good, Ben (worth the drive over here). It'll be at North Cave village hall tomorrow evening and South Cave family centre on Friday evening if you can make it.
Tried a few places but best in town for me is Sue Downs in Sutton. Perfect fish and chips every time, never had a bad lot from there and go most Friday's when at home. Plus they will lightly fry the fish if you ask when you order. Better than that hard crusty batter. Will try papas though as I was brought up on fish and chips coming from hessle road. Chip shop every 20 yards down there when I was a kid.
It'll be round at his next week now that it's public knowledge that Wednesday is his day off his diet.
Close by my small but stupidly expensive house in London there is a chippy called Olley's. It even has its own website. Haddock, Chips and Mushy Peas are on special offer at £11! It is, though, very good and compares well with my favourite Hull chippy, Latus on Holderness Road.
The last time I had fish and hips at a restaurant was at fisherman's wharf in Monterrey a month or so ago. It made me want to vomit afterwards. Its what I get for having it at a tourist spot I suppose. please log in to view this image
If anyone visits Victoria, BC, I can recommend Barb's on Fisherman's Wharf or Red Fish, Blue Fish at the junction of Wharf and Fort streets (downtown). Living in Regina, the best fish and chips are made by me which, inspired by this thread, I made tonight. Cod in OLM's batter recipe, chips and Bachelors mushy peas as it was too short notice to make my own. A glass of Fursty Ferret during preparation and Marston's Pedigree with. All in all, pretty good. Thanks again OLM.
How I long for a large haddock large chips and large mushy peas (with a large **** afterwards) from Frydays - roll on Christmas!
We rented a house close to Barbs in Victoria - also had fish and chips at Spinnakers Brew Pub (just across the bay in Victoria). Both pretty good but somehow not quite up to Hull standard. Also a very good chippy in Vesuvius Bay on Saltspring Island (short drive from Canada Tiger's lovely home) - fabulous views, really good selection of fish and excellent beer.
Talk of proper fish and chips certainly seems to tug at the heart-strings of our overseas contingent.
Went and had a nose in there today and picked up a menu. Reminds me of the Ketch (never went in Woody's). Prices seem reasonable. Didn't eat any as we'd used the mobile fish van the day before. Will have to check to quality when my wife gets back in the country in a couple of weeks.
