Well the Great British Summer ruined Ascot (definitely last visit) and now we have Not So Glorious Goodwood. Reportedly it is soft on the straight course and good to soft elsewhere, which hopefully will dry up quickly before the end of the week. Mark Johnston has an excellent record down in Sussex and fields three in the opening race. Last year’s winner Sennockian Star got no assistance from the saddle at York last time and will probably pop up at a decent price now that my money does not hinder him. I like easy Windsor winner ELHAAME but that was fast ground and this is a shorter trip. At Newmarket, the only two-year-old that went in my notebook was Superlative Stakes winner Birchwood, for which he picks up a penalty in the Vintage Stakes. The problem is that he was soundly beaten in Ireland on his penultimate start on easy ground. In his SportingLife.com column, Richard Fahey is not sure that the ground was the issue but it is a big enough question mark to make this just a race to watch.
How typical. The ex-Cumani horse, Elhaame, gets the run of the race, the rail opens up with a furlong and a half to go and he gets collared in the last fifty yards by Mount Logan, the Cumani horse. I know that Mark Johnston says that his horses are always trying but that is consecutive races were Norton has failed to get Sennockian Star to the front and he has finished well beaten. That should get him dropped a couple of pounds by the handicapper.
Galileo Gold gets the sponsors most of the prize money back in the Vintage Stakes to justify their purchase of Hugo Palmer’s colt. Buick found plenty of traffic trouble on Birchwood, but would he have been good enough to win with a clear run on that ground? In the Lennox Stakes (3:10), there are four or five possibles. I would have backed Aeolus when he was a non-runner ten days ago in a lesser race but this is tougher. Dutch Connection won the Jersey Stakes and followed home Territories in the falsely-run Prix Jean Prat last time. Charlie Hills’ colt was hammered six lengths by Faydhan in his only race on easy ground last year. Safety Check has spent half his career on artificial surfaces, has not been seen in five months and most importantly has been stuffed on three of his five races on easy ground, his sole victory being a nursery. Riding arrangements leave Richard Hughes on Tupi, soundly beaten by Elm Park on soft ground last year. Last year’s defeated favourite TOORMORE was well beaten in the Queen Anne last time, has not troubled the judge in his last six races but did win the Vintage Stakes two years ago on easy ground. A repeat of his heavy ground third in last year’s QEII could see him end his losing run. If he does not win today, then file Toormore under “another failed Godolphin purchase”.
Toormore illustrated that he is only a Group 2 horse. Doubtless they will go for the Jacques le Marois or the Moulin next and he will be put back in his place. The Goodwood 3:45 often provides clues to the Ebor handicap but with the state of the ground will much be learned today? Astronereus did me a favour last time but has to give weight all around here. The eye is immediately drawn to Mark Johnston’s NOTARISED, winner of the Old Newton Cup last time on easy ground (accounting for four of today’s rivals in doing so) and clearly a horse going in the right direction.
AHAHAHA - thats the beauty of watching a race without the sound on in work .. It was BLUE WAVE ... what a plonker !!! apologies to all NOTARISED backers ...
Now then Swanny wanted me to give a tip .. here goes .. one called CARNAROSS runs this coming Friday or Sunday ... I shall advise when I know which it is ..
Johnston’s horse that has not been out for more than a year, Blue Wave, sits second behind his other runner Notarised the whole race then picks him off with a hundred yards to go. That is twice today that I have been on the ‘wrong’ one. First Cumani, now Johnston. There are no other Fahey horses – or ex-Fahey horses – in the last, so when this loses the ‘wrong’ one streak ends! Richard Fahey thinks that the straight course last time did not favour THIRD TIME LUCKY when he was fourth time unlucky and the three year old grey can return to winning ways at the expense of Ifwecan and Hannington.
Three bets for Galway later Long Dog/Valvac double 7/2 5.45 Hash Brown win 9/4 6.50 Hint of Tint 10/1 (expect a decent run from this lad)
A long lay off but had similar spell on the sidelines before coming 3 length sixth in this last year. 14lb lower this time round. Interesting, little dabble methinks
Think De Sousa is beginning to wish he'd gone to Goodwood. Only 1 odds on favourite winner so far with just one ride left.
Going for DYLLAN here in the next at Goodwood. Hannon has 5 in this but I'm with this fella. Drawn in 1 he will have plenty of room on the outside which hopefully will suit his hold up style going by his only 2 races. Last race both horses were drawn 1 and 2 so going for it in this race.
Gave you a right scare at the 2nd last there but was finding plenty on the flat. Buying money in hindsight. Well done.
Cheers for that Had a good day despite the rain with a couple of winners + an each way. Left break even after paying for tickets parking food drink and all bets
