If you look at things like Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs and Hertzberg's Satisfiers/Dissatisfiers theories then it's an accepted view that money doesn't motivate people, but that things like praise, status, achievement, feelings of worth ect are motivating. The lack of money is demotivating or a dissatisfier, but even rich people (and lets face it even Delph on a moderate wage for a footballer is very rich) get demotivated even though they have lots of money.

Blimey - must be nigh on 20 years since I last saw Maslow and Hertzberg being discussed. Thanks for dredging up the bad memories again<laugh> I do wonder how much money plays a part in players' decisions to go to other clubs. Obviously they are not going to say no to the extra cash but I am sure most (clearly not all) of them do it in the belief that they are good enough to break into the first team and then they'll be pushing for trophies which brings into play the factors you mention.

I don't blame Delph. If he has no emotional ties to Villa then it's merely a case of being offered a far better job for far more money. He's made himself look a bit of a tit though and no mistake.

I'm sure being made captain and being praised as one of their best players makes a few strong emotional ties.

But tbh you couldn't really blame him for leaving such a badly run sinking ship for a team challenging at the right end of the league/competitions. It's just the way he did it that I think rubs people up the wrong way.

Talking of Delph, he was stretchered off injured on his debut for City. I bet the Villa fans will be out on a vigil for him....

It's not a good time for (friendly) debuts is it? Delph gets injured, Bergovic concedes four, didn't Gerrard lose on his?

Nah in fairness he won on his and scored with a couple of assists. The Barca one was game 2 or 3.

You of all people should know it's not £49m. It's £44m less £8.8m so £35m. Almost the sum they paid fot Benteke.

Less the £4m loyalty bonus to Sterling, so really they had to put £1.5m in to buy Benteke plus agents fee <ok>
