Soccer Sauce @soccer_sauce 6m6 minutes ago Hearing of a bid this evening of around £3.5m for Excelsior ST Tom van Weert from Norwich. The player scored 16 goals last season. #NCFC
25 yr old Striker who started nearly the whole of last season as a lone striker, now entering the last year of his contract. Whoscored reckon his playing style is based around layoffs and flick ons, although passing isn't a strength apparently. Won about 50% of his aerial contests, and most of his goals come from within the penalty area. Would probably be cheap (£3.5m closer to his selling point than it is for Brady!) and better suited to our style of play than other names linked. Don't know enough to get more excited really.
I've literally never heard of him, not necessarily uncommon but I struggle to cast judgement. It moments like this I turn to you tube - I know but it's all I have - but he's not there! However we probably need another striker and he seems to fit what we're after.
Does that mean you have a team full of dregs ? As you was relegated the season before ? If so doesn't bode well for you this season !
I also feel it's time to move on from Brady to Alonso. I can't see what van Weert offers that we haven't already got in RvW.
I think he just means there are other players out there. I like Brady, but there are other alternatives just as good (and cheaper than Bruce's overpriced offerings)
Just saw a bit of Marcos Alonso in the Fiorentina v PSG Club Champs game in USA. Didn't see the whole game but he looked handy enough. One mistake that lead directly to a PSG goal but other than that, looked reasonably comfortable. Not sure he'd oust Mr Olsson from the little I saw and of course its basically a friendly so, who knows... I'd be surprised if we hear much progress on him while this tournament is on though.
Do you really think £3.5m for a completely unproven striker with no more than a half-decent strike rate in a vastly inferior league is cheap? I certainly don't, I know nothing about this guy but from what I do know I'm not interested. Are you referring to transfermarket.com "selling points"? If so that even further fuels my lack of confidence in anything that comes up with as surely the fact he's never played outside of the Dutch league makes him a far bigger risk than Brady who has played all his football in England, a large chunk of it in the Premier League.
I think we'd struggle to get the same quality of striker from the championship for anything anywhere near that price. Depending on how you rate the Portuguese versus the Dutch league, he's a darn sight cheaper than RvW was. It's a risk, but I don't think we'd find anyone who isn't a risk at that price. Having just checked, transfermarkt value him at £560k, so completely irrelevant.
I wouldn't say his asset value is irrelevant, I'd say that £3.5m is 6 times that, which seems inflated to me (3 or 4 times (£2m) would be reasonable). This suggests an unproven player and therefore a big gamble to me. I suspect agent speak is going on.
FFS I know it's largely my fault but can we please have a ban on mentioning or referring to transfermarkt details for a player until after a transfer has completed because it keeps on being used completely incorrectly? It's a loose estimate and so it's only really properly useful after a transfer has happened as then everything updates and you can see what the value is and how much of a premium has been paid. Anything before that is, as has been discussed well beyond the point of boredom, guesswork (albeit at least slightly educated). Never heard of Tom van Weert. Clearly he had a stellar season in the Eredvisie last year and he would fit our system. We know that we have now got a developed scouting network in the Low Countries, so if there is any truth in the rumour I'm sure we'll have done our homework. £3.5m is small fry for a striker these days, so I would say that's not too big a risk, although continental estimates of transfer prices sometimes include the player's salary for what's left of their contract or something like that? So it might be the actual fee is quite a bit lower as if he's on £20kpw you can dock of £1m... Who knows.
sorry chaps that wasn't aimed at anyone in particular just generally I think it's causing a lot of pointless grief - every time someone says anything people seem to assume it comes from that bloody website and either dismiss it or see it as gospel... Back to van Weert...
Not blaming you for anything Munky. Don't be hypersensitive - I said your scepticism about the website-that-shall-not-be-named was absolutely right. All I was asking is that people stop misrepresenting how people are trying to use it, and you were far from the only one who was doing that and definitely not the worst
