I never realised Keith Lemon and Avid Merrion are the same person... explains why I find them both annoying.
You don't play an alter ego; you assume an alter ego and you're known as that 'person'. At award events, characters from tv go as themselves and accept the award as Bill Roache not Ken Barlow [years and years since I watched CS presume he's still in it]. We know both 'people'. We don't know Simon Bodkin we only know Lee Nelson why - because that's how he's known. He doesn't appear as himself and having now looked him up I can't find a single video of him being interviewed as himself. Thought I'd found one on the BBC breakfast show but it turned out to be him as Lee Nelson speaking about his tour!
He has several alter egos. Whether you use the word play, or assume, they are still not him. Alter ego Shmalter Shmego, he is playing a character. You don't find many Sacha Baron Cohen interviews as himself either, only as Ali G, Borat or Bruno. Doesn't make a difference.
I don't think anybody thinks Lee Nelson isn't a character, that's not been the contention. The point is he's known as Lee Nelson and not Simon. In order for someone to be seen as 'playing' a role, you have to know who they are in reality - we don't know Simon Bodkin.
Yeh you're right At least I know now there's a comedian called Lee Nelson and what exploits he's been up to.
