Then you too are the only two who really get to trash it out about mcclean and his actions.

I have no concept of losing anyone in such circumstances and what feelings it would create.

<peacedove> I'm sure like me you don't want to be dragging up personal stuff on a public football forum. But I can understand where you're coming from <ok>

Yeah Hash <ok>. Without going into details, my family felt consequences on both sides of the divide throughout the troubles, some became even more entrenched as a result on both sides and never the twain will meet again and I genuinely understand why they feel that way.

Weirdly I always felt stuck in the middle not convinced of either sides argument as a justification for seeing that level of hurt...basically felt like an outsider when talking to family and friends with that amount of absolute conviction they are right or the wronged side as it were. Like you weren't really effected by the loss if you didn't hate. I understand why but can't do it myself.

It's why I don't really care about national identity much anymore..neither present states or suggested states gives me a warm fuzzy feeling of "home" as there will always be an "unwanted group".

Here, does Daniello <sp?> still visit the board?.He was from Serbia wasn't he? If we think we had it bad what the hell is it like living in those states identity wise? How do they honour their dead in such recent and claustrophobic circumstances?

His name was James Gore, a Flight Sergeant in a Halifax bomber based at Driffield, the bomb aimer in an Aussie crew. Born in Knotty Ash and a rabid Blue. 21 years old when his bomber was shot down over Essen two months from the end of the war. His name was Ronny Stewart, 17 years old when his freighter was torpedoed 400 miles from the West coast of Eire. Two weeks adrift, they survived by drinking their own urine. His name was George Wildsmith. he was a Chindit and weighed 12st when he went into the jungles of Burma. He was shipped home slowly in 1946 after the war after six months of steroids had only just increased his weight to 9 1/2 st after going down to 6st.

Just some of my family (and that's without mentioning those who fought in WW1 or Korea). I'm sure everyone on here, including most Irish posters, have a similar tale. I rage against the monsters (especially in WW1) who sent them to their death. I know my freedom to say these things relies on their sacrifices, and not the cut and paste snipings of keyboard warriers of today.

But anyway, this wasn't about Poppy Day - this time the self-righteous **** wouldn't even acknowledge the flag of the UK. Bit like those bitter rednecks in southern US states not acknowledging the flag of the Union. Now, if he really feels so strongly about the UK and what it stands for, then why the **** is here, in England, earning his living?

Would be a bit like my daughter taking a nursing job in Germany, but refusing to acknowledge the symbols and representatives of the state because of what happened 75 years ago. Luckily, through her school and her mother taking in students, she has friends her own age who are German (and Italian), and that's the way it should be. But IF she still felt unable to forgive modern Germans for the actions of their ancestors you'd have to ask "Why the **** go and work there?".
