Which is why it's good to be tolerant and respectful. Just to add a bit of frivolity to a serious discussion - Gary Neville finding out [on Question of Sport] that his great grandmother was scouse didn't go down too well <laugh>

I think thats a hard one. I personally think there is a good case for team Gb to be disbanded really. however the opposite can be said when it comes to fifa. fifa would love us to not have 4 votes and have one gb vote.

I think for rugby ulster with respect as a provence would be getting the wooden spoon permanently and while they've a good set up they have not got enough players. thefore NI who can only pull form that pool and nothte international players signing on to play either.

republic on the other hand seems to have plenty of players.

Really its sports so politics shouldn't come into it. If more athletes can go to olympics if its split up then split it up i say.

Didn't just stay neutral. they unnofficially supplied the u-boats in two world wars, and they sent condolences to Doenitz after it was confirmed that Hitler was dead.

And you're bloody over-simplifying that too!

Firstly, De valera never suggested it at all: it was suggested by the then British Envoy to Dublin. Secondly, De Valera was the one who dismissed it out of hand, suggesting (probably rightly) that neither the Dael (sp) nor parliament would pass such a deal. Finally, this is backed up by the fact that a spiteful Churchill couldn't wait unitl VE day to send a sneering communique to De Velera to the opportunity that he'd missed.

I probably wouldn't go so far as to call it a sick joke but the way it's become almost obligatory and some use non participation as a stick to beat people with is a tad disturbing.

Do a bit of research UIR and enlighten yourself, Britain shamed itself in Ireland for centuries and were themselves responsible for the reaction during the second world war.

So the millions who gave their lives in order to stop the Nazi advance deserve no respect or remembrance for their ultimate sacrifice?

You live in a ****ing sick bubble lad.

They do it just shouldn't be forced on people where you become a pariah if you don't join the circle jerk belief that soldiers are heroes.

If you played football or worked here in Ireland and the wearing of the Easter Lily became as spasticated as the poppy( by which I mean you're the odd one out if you don't wear one) Would you wear one or refuse knowing that it's honouring Ireland's patriot dead ? Men who fought British forces for independence. Would you suck it up and Don the lily or would you refuse ?

Hash, no one is forced to wear the Poppy. And I know loads of people who don't, mainly because they don't really take the time out of their hectic lives to consider what it means - fair enough. But it's a different thing to take an abject stand against it, like the scum who go around burning poppies etc around remembrance day.

If you live in the UK, then suck it up, it's part of our history and the sacrifices (think about that word and what it means) that teenagers made so that we could moan about our first world problems are something that we could all do well to think about, just once a year.

    That's a nonsense comparison.

The Easter lily is soley about Irish republican dead. Remembrance day is about ALL of those from the commonwealth and Europe, who gave their lives across the spectrum to protect the freedom that we take for granted, in the 2 World Wars.

In any case, I was replying to his comment that insulted the soldiers that died in those conflicts, with his glib "dead soldiers are heroes my arse". To dismiss what those poor souls did for our society in the World wars with such a snide put down, derserves nothing but disdain as far as I'm concerned.
