"I dont see how this is relevant to a 'who is the best dribbler' argument.

Jonas can dribble well. He cant play the final ball.
Tiote can dribble for a DM. He plays the simple ball.
    "

    Main point.
Backing it up, not that important.

You completely ignored the fact that distributing the ball, whether it be a cross, a simple ball or a 50 yard pass has nothing to do with dribbling. You do this a lot, Tash; if there's something you can't deal with you ignore it

  3. Howay lads. Jonas is a cracking dribbler, but he's hardly amazing.

  5. Oh **** off mate. I don't do that at all. I've made plenty of comments replying to people about dribbling, and you're obviously ignoring them to make a comment like that.

What exactly was ignoring. "Jonas can dribble well, Tiote can dribble for a DM". What an elaborate point i was ignoring.

I made a comment about the fact that Tiote doesn't just play simple balls. It doesn't mean i ignored the rest of the comment, just that i've already responded to plenty about that now.

You've mentioned why you think Tiote's a better dribbler, and the way you've put it it's very convincing... because you are completely ignoring what dribbling is. Tiote does dribble well, but he doesn't really make up much ground, which is pretty much the whole point of dribbling, to gain advantage up the pitch. You wouldn't say a player that ran backwards from the edge of the opposition box was a good dribbler even if he kept the ball every time.

that's a nice straw man you've created, unfortunately the topic you brought up wasnt "who dribbles the best relative to the position they play". Tiote rarely if ever dribbles, it's not his job. He has quick feet, he is technically proficient, he can turn an opposing player, maintain posession and pass it to a teammate, but that's NOT dribbling. That part in the game where Jonas gets the ball, turns and runs with it 20 meters past a player, that's dribbling, and he's the only one of our team who did it effectively and consistently throughout the season (bar Enrique who was able to support him in that respect because that's what Jonas does so well) hence why most of our attacking play came down the left last season. Teams realised this and double marked him, which shows he's more of a threat than you give him credit for, it's also why we need a similar player on the right (zog <wah>) both for a similar attacking threat on the opposite flank, and so players can't simply double mark Jonas because they know theres going to be no-one attacking down the right

  10. Tiote's dribbling doesn't necessarily frighten defenders and isn't really attacking style dribbling, but he does skin players and gets passed them. I know fine well what dribbling is. Tiote doesn't necessarily go far forward to the oppositions goal with his dribbling, but the point is he gets passed people well, skins them and as a result can distribute it as he got passed obstacles (other players) to make the pass or play the ball to where he chooses.

What Tiote does isn't always attacking style, but because of him, we can start attacks and maintain possession. So Tiote himself doesn't cause attacking threat, but his contribution is part of being a more creative team and therefore being able to attack more often and keep possession.

Might be my age showing, but I genuinely can't think of a better dribbler than Jonas in all my time watching the toon. Not Dyer, not Ginola, certainly not Jose. Jonas has his shortcomings, but I've never seen anyone ghost past a player with such ease, which is probably why he generally ends up having to beat three to get anywhere near the box. If we can get to a point this season where he can start his runs in the final third rather than picking it up from the back he'll be far more dangerous.

Tiotes a very strong centre mid who's confident in possession and good at using his body to shield the ball and keep possession (and a great long and short passer, which isn't relevant to this discussion) but I can count the number of forward runs he's made and beat a man on one hand.

Also, Steve Harper doesn't lose possession much while dribbling, maybe he's number 1?

Beardsley surely. But then I can't even think of a better player we've had than him.

    On topic:

    1. Jonas
    2. Enrique
    3. Ben Arfa
    4. Ferguson
    5. Coloccini

  14. Ok, after thinking about it, i'd probably say Jonas was better and i'd put him above Tiote, but i still think Tiote can dribble well.

  15. I know Ben Arfa isn't exactly proven on our team, but i'd still put him at number 1. He's played at CL level and his skills and dribbling ability are immense at his best, definitely better than what we have now/

I agree. Tiote can skip past a player or two better than most DMs. Off the top of my head, I can only think of Yaya Toure and Muamba that are better at it.

that's being technically good with the ball at your feet, shielding the ball and turning a player (tiote's awesome at it) but it's not dribbling
