He is a Klopp type player though. Playing 4-3-3 with Lewandowski who wasn't known for pace, but would always get on the end of everything put in the box.
So I agree, he isn't right, but will be when Rodgers gets rightly sacked this Autumn.

Lewandowski has a very good first touch and isn't exactly a slouch! He's also got a fair amount of trickery and could turn on a sixpence.

He and Benteke are very different players. Robert would suit us in 4-3-3, Beneteke...well, in my eyes, doesn't. Best thing about him is his song.

I made the same Benteke / Carroll comparison and said Benteke's signing represented a complete about turn on Liverpool's attacking strategy but it wasn't received well as apparently it had to be a wind up.

Pretty sure a fair few people are clutching at straws and trying to see positives in him - unsurprising given how he'll be our second most expensive player ever! - and yet the fact that he divides fans so distinctly for that price should sound alarm bells. A 32mill player shouldn't divide opinion...not exactly a cheap gamble. I hope he does well, why wouldn't I? I just don't see it.

Now I need to wash myself for agreeing.

So you agree that some people read the poster not the post? Good for you.

  7. People certainly carry reputations, you reap what you sow and all that. Doesn't mean the point being made is right or wrong if someone responds due to the posters reputation though.

The scary thing is Danny Ings might well turn out to perform much better for you guys than Benteke, purely because he's more suited to your playing style.

I might be wrong and Benteke could do wonderfully for you guys, but if they played the same amount of games I bet Ings would score more goals in your current setup.

As a United fan I'm surprised you didn't go for someone like Hernandez (Chicharito). I know him being a United player probably means it wouldn't be considered, but someone LIKE him would be way more suited to you guys...

I think Benteke will be fine in our team, people are getting too wrapped up in the style of play argument good players will adapt and find a way to link up with each other.

Well said. Last season one of our major flaws was the way we played - very one dimensional that was easy to counteract. Benteke will give us options for sure.

Our fans somehow expect us to sign world class strikers, I personally think many of them need to wake up to the fact that these strikers will go to CL clubs or clubs that will offer major wages. Unfortunately we fall short on both of those categories, so we have to fish around in the next group of strikers. It's either take a gamble on a foreign striker with potential, or buy someone that is available that has a good scoring record in the PL. We've obviously taken the latter option - and those that say he's just another Carroll are just being stupid. Benteke has a better game than Carroll, in every single department.

I'm sure he'll adapt to our style. He's very good at holding the ball up so our attacking midfielders should have a field day with Benteke and his aerial threat. Plus he's clinical in front of goal - other than Sturridge, all of our strikers last season weren't. We had to play Sterling up front they were so bad ffs <laugh>

O'Driscall was saying just recently that he likes to mix up the game plan, play it long when needed and it seems we have a striker that fits into what we're planning next season. With Suarez and Sterling both gone now, I expect us to see a different style of play. One that isn't completely predictable.

I like Balotelli. He makes Adebayor seem easy to move.

On topic, I don’t like your signing of Bentecke, meaning I think it’s a good buy for you. He doesn’t suit your style of play, and he is expensive, but you’re getting the best aerial threat in the PL, and a player who has a good scoring record. It’s interesting to note he was having a crap year till Sherwood came in. Then he suddenly started pouring them in, exactly as Adebayor, another tall African striker, did the year before for us. Sherwood’s teams are really good at getting 2 v 2 breaks. I didn’t see what happened at Villa, but time after time it was Adebayor and Eriksen versus 2 defenders.

On the other hand, a top aerial threat with a good scoring record also described Carroll. I wonder if and how much you’re going to change your playing style.

I think this is spot on.

Benteke had a massive drought last season before Sherwoods arrival. He changed their style and the counter attacking play suited his game as he got space and the opportunity to run at defenders. Whilst he's good in the air, he's not at his best when the opposition defence are set imo.

Last season we missed the ability to break quickly on teams. There was no effective out ball. This in turn meant teams were more comfortable pressing us in our own area, which also made it more difficult to play our way out. So it killed us in two ways.

Benteke and Carroll are not the same anyway but Carroll also had the problem that at the time the team was focussed on just getting everything to go through Suarez.

Well, I think he's a lot, lot more mobile than Carroll, but he does seem easy to isolate. Arsenal pretty well nulified him in the FA final, but they always struggled when Suarez, Sturridge and Sterling were buzzing. Well, we haven't got those three any more, so we'd better get used to it.

he's overpriced at £32m, but so was Sterling. When Villa get that money, whatever they go for will be ratcheted up by a degree too. Market economics. But I certainly have higher hopes for him than Balotelli, though I personally have never blamed Mario at all for the **** up that was his signature. Appears the 'Committee' forced that one on Bron, whilst Benteke was forced on th Committee by Bron - so if this doesn't work out he's presumably toast.

Just hope we're not buying him on the basis that every time he's faced us he's spanked Skrtel. I'd barely heard of lovren before we spunked £20m on him (I wanted a reliable old carthorse like Ashley Williams, at least until Sakho learned the Prem better), but was told by various wise heads that Lovren had been immense when Soton came to Anfield in '13 and played us off the park. Joe Cole was another who'd played some fantastic games against us whilst at Chelsea, but we wouldn't heed the message that Chelsea were only prepared to offer him half the contract renewal to the one he was on.

Still, if nowt else, he's surely got to be a better plan B than poor old Lambert turned out to be....
