Benteke - good buy for us?

Discussion in 'Liverpool' started by carlthejackal, Jul 15, 2015.

  1. Signing someone because they're better than Lambert, Balotelli and Borini is pretty ****ing stupid. Signing Charlie Austin would fulfil that aim! They are not the level we should be aiming for!

You're back on form. Fully in tune with the Scouse boom / bust cycle.

In all seriousness it must be depressing to be a Liverpool fan at the minute. Your marquee summer signing is Benteke. Who'd have thunk that would be possible when Suarez, Sterling and Sturridge were tearing defences apart.

I'm having a very nice summer actually. The team has improved no matter what you'd like to believe. I'm not into all this 'marquee' bullshit anyway, we sign players that will help the team. We're not a group of individuals like the bunch at Utd.

You're clearly scared of Benteke and Sturridge feeding off Coutinho and Firmino - admit it, we won't look at you differently. You'll always be the Liverpool boards little pet.

Striker Christian Benteke is due to have a medical at Liverpool after they reached an agreement with Aston Villa over his £32.5m transfer.
The Reds' club doctor will now travel to the UK from the team's tour of Australia to complete Benteke's medical in the next 48 hours.
However, the 24-year-old Belgium international will not join up with his new team-mates on the tour.
Benteke joined Villa from Genk in 2012 for £7m, scoring 49 goals in 101 games.
Liverpool made a move for the striker after receiving funds from the £49m sale of Raheem Sterling to Premier League rivals Manchester City.
Benteke, who still has two years left on his Villa contract, scored 12 goals in 12 games last season to help Tim Sherwood's side avoid relegation from the top flight.

This is a great signing for Liverpool. I actually truly hoped United would have got him. I like the player!

This statement is stupid! How do you know that the players signed by Liverpool would not be bunch of individuals? You have a crystal ball? It would be good for us football fans to get emotions out of our sack before putting out their perspectives as some sort of fact. Every team that has signed several players are all at the risk of what you've pointed out. Liverpool signed several players last season and did that make the team better? No! You can argue the same for Tottenham and Man United (but at least they got 4th place).

Clyne is proven, a clear improvement on what you have already, and was a decent price. Also I tried to leave your defence alone. I don't just criticise for the sake of it <whistle>

I really don't know re Benteke.

He has scored 1 in 2. You cannot argue with that.

    I just don't know.

It could work really well. I don't see him totally flopping like Balo to be fair as he is proven to a good standard in this league.

£32 mill though there is no room for error.

I don't think there that many 2 games for 1 goal players out there. Especially in the Premier League. Even RVP was 2:1. He's also 24. In today's market, 32m is not bad at all.

No doubt he's a good striker, and his scoring rate shows that. The main concern is how he will fit in with your playing style, or if Rodgers will adapt the gameplan to Benteke. A second concern is his injury record but it's not such a big issue imho.

I can't see Rodgers going with two strikers in a 4-4-2, so in my mind the question is how he will fit in to your playstyle. In my opinion its going to be a mix& mash effort. He will have to work on making better runs than he has shown previously, as you need a striker that moves around... And your players will have to get more crosses into the box, i'm not sure how your guys will adapt to that to be honest. Fullbacks will be fine but your wide players are predominantly playmakers or guys cutting inside, not exactly wingers who run to the byline and put crosses in...

I wouldn't be surprised if he goes for a 4-4-2 diamond or the 3-5-2 similar to last season but with Sturridge/Ings/Benteke/Firmino up top.

But I still don't think he'll work out for us. I have exactly the same concerns as the things you've listed there and I don't think its something we'll be able to overcome to get the best out of him.

What I don't get, is how so many fans can have the same concern about him not suiting how we play best (ball on the deck, little width and crosses, fast passing and pressing) and yet our management seem so determined to spunk 32mill on another Carroll. Rodgers even got rid of Andy for that very reason! Nothing I have seen in Benteke's performances have convinced me that he's any different as a player. If we'd bought some quality wide men who hug the byline this summer, ok, fair enough, but we haven't even done that. We've forked out for Firmino who's another tricky central player who likes movement around him.

    Just doesn't add up.

So many fans can't be wrong, can they?

I agree that we'll likely end up 4-4-2 diamond or 3-5-2. 4-4-2 neglects the likes of Ibe, Lallana and Markovic (45mill of players) whilst 3-5-2 neglects one of Coutinho or Firmino and probably Lallana and Markovic too!
