All competitions are invitational in the widest meaning of that word, including today's Champions League.

Newcastle did not gain entry to the competition because we had a trade fair. All teams in the then First Division would have been able to play in the competition subject to them qualifying pursuant to the then prevailing rules. We did. The fact we were tenth really has nothing to do with it. The rules were set out before the season began and we qualified. No arguement.

It was at that time recognised as being the third competition in Europe behind the European Cup and the Cup Winner's Cup. Also the fact that all of the London teams combined (London XI) were unable to manage to do what we did manage to do I think shows how good we were, wouldn't you agree?

I noticed you also missed re-quoting the first part of the previous point made by me in relation to Fredor's huge claim about your lots Premier League achievements and assume you accept my point as being correct in any event. No doubt if my assumption is wrong you will let me know.

The mackems hate our European success, winning a recognised trophy. Of course it was mickey mouse, that's why it counted Barcelona, Roma, Valencia, Ferenvacos, Leeds, Juventus, Arsenal, Milan, Man U etc among those who competed in it or won it. They weren't interested though honest. They were just putting out full sides full of internationals for a laugh even though it ran right through the season...

It was actually the season BEFORE we won it that qualification changed in 1968. The trade fairs rule had been dropped already but they updated the rules again in 1968 to make qualification based entirely on league position (subject to the one city one club rule). The reason we qualified from tenth was because the one club from one city rule still existed in ALL European competitions until 1975 - including the newly formed UEFA Cup which started in 1971. I know you will see us as a Mickey Mouse team (as it should be) but when Barcelona list their Inter Cities Fair Cup Wins on their club page as real European Trophy wins then you can see that we are not alone - and they aren't exactly in need of grasping credibility like it could be claimed that we are.

An interesting aside is that the reason UEFA changed their one city one club rule for Europe in 1975 was because of threatened legal action by Everton who would have been left out of Europe due to Liverpool having already qualified for a higher ranked competition. The only other time UEFA have changed qualification rules due to threatened legal action was after Liverpool won the Champion's League but wouldn't have qualified to defend the trophy due to Everton having qualified for the Champion's League due to finishing fourth. So the same two clubs were involved both times UEFA changed rules due to threatened legal action.

Sunderland fans will always try to play down our European success, just as we would if the situations were reversed. We can never undo the fact that UEFA will never recognise our ICFC win even though FIFA accepted it as a major European trophy. Ironically, UEFA's official site does list us as having won a major European trophy in 2006. Not even we are deluded enough to agree with them that the Intertoto cup was a major trophy though.
