New Zealand Football have confirmed they will lodge a formal appeal with Oceania Football over accusations they fielded an ineligible player in their Olympic qualifying tournament in Papua New Guinea.
'No excuse' for Oly Whites dumping, says football commentator

New Zealand were forced to forfeit their finals spot and a chance to secure a spot at next year's Rio Olympics, after Vanuatu protested that they had fielded an ineligible player in South African-born Deklan Wynne, after New Zealand had beaten them 2-0 in the semi-finals.
Vanuatu was defeated by Fiji in a penalty shoot-out in the final yesterday.
New Zealand Football CEO Andy Martin said having taken advice from Oceania Football Confederation on the rules for the competition and having received confirmation of eligibility of the squad from the Pacific Games Council in advance of the tournament, they would take up their right of appeal.
"New Zealand Football has acted in good faith at all times and we would have expected any issues on player eligibility to have been raised in advance, through the process we were given, so that they could have been dealt with properly in a timely fashion," Martin said.
The chief executive of the Fiji Football Association, Bob Kumar, says the Pacific Island team had no reason to suspect New Zealand's team had an ineligible player and were surprised when the matter was raised by Vanuatu.
He says Fiji will watch from the sidelines if New Zealand challenges its disqualification
"That's for New Zealand to sort it out with the Oceania Football Confederation. We are not involved with that so will not be worried about it at this stage."

New Zealand footballer Deklan Wynne has become the centre of an ineligibility storm.
Pacific Games Council executive director Andrew Minogue has dismissed the notion that New Zealand Football were misled into thinking Deklan Wynne was an eligible player in Olympic qualifiers.
The New Zealand U-23 men's football team were dumped out of the Olympic qualifying tournament for Oceania in Papua New Guinea on Sunday for fielding an ineligible player during the semifinal.
That player was Wynne, a South African-born left back who has also played matches for New Zealand at under-20 and full senior level in the past year.
New Zealand Football chief executive Andy Martin said in a statement on Monday afternoon that New Zealand Football had received confirmation of the eligibility of their squad from the Pacific Games Council before the tournament began.
However, because the Olympic qualifying tournament was run by the Oceania Football Confederation, not the Pacific Games, that confirmation was irrelevent.
"New Zealand Football has acted in good faith at all times and we would have expected any issues on player eligibility to have been raised in advance, through the process we were given, so that they could have been dealt with properly in a timely fashion," Martin said.
"Our lawyers are working on the appeal currently and are reviewing both the process followed and the OFC Disciplinary Committee's interpretation of the Regulations Governing the Application of the Statutes and how this has been applied in similar cases."
Minogue admitted to causing confusion around Wynne's eligibility because the New Zealand football side were included in an eligible player list sent out compiled prior to the tournament.
But Minogue said it has been clear all along that New Zealand's football team are not part of the Pacific Games football tournament, but were offered the Pacific Games experience while playing in the Oceania Football run Olympic qualifier.
"It would be flimsy for NZ football to rely on that information as they knew they weren't competing in the Pacific Games tournament," Minogue said.
"All the stakeholders know that New Zealand football were never invited to participate in the Pacific Games. For the general public it might be confusing, and we are looking at making changes for the next Pacific Games, but everybody involved knew that New Zealand weren't part of the Pacific Games tournament itself."
The New Zealand Olympic Commiittee were well aware that the Olympic qualifiers were under the jurisdiction of Oceania Football.
Communications director Ashley Abbott said the Olympic qualifying tournament was run alongside the Pacific Games, but wasn't part of them.
"The qualifying event ran alongside the Pacific Games taking place in Papua New Guinea, but was a separately run tournament under the jurisdiction of the Oceania Football Confederation," Abbott said.
She said the NZOC had no role in selecting the Oly Whites team for the tournament.
"Football New Zealand selected the team for the tournament.

"The situation is extremely regrettable, particularly for the athletes concerned. We understand Football New Zealand is continuing to challenge the decision with urgency."
Wynne was born in South Africa but moved to New Zealand with his family more than five years ago. With no birthright, and no family born in New Zealand, Wynne is required to live here continuously for five years after the age of 18 to qualify as an All White under Fifa rules.
That is unless New Zealand Football made a request to Fifa to change Wynne's national association, a move players can request once before the age of 21 if they're eligible for more than one national team.
If that had happened, Vanuatu's protest would have been thrown out. It didn't.
Unless New Zealand Football has information they are yet to release, Oceania Football and Fifa's sanctions are clear in a case like this.
According to the Oceania Football Confederation's Disciplinary Code, if an ineligible player takes the field in a game his team forfeits the match and must pay a minimum $500 fine.
New Zealand Football had 15 days to appeal the decision, and must pay Oceania Football $1500 to do so.
If New Zealand Football fail in their appeal, the last chance at overturning the decision would be to take the case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Switzerland.
The United States went through the proper process earlier this year in clearing their under-20 star, Gedion Zelalem, to play at the Fifa U-20 World Cup.
German-born Zelalem was ineligible to play for the United States in January despite becoming a naturalised American citizen and living there between 2006-2013.
Fifa granted US Soccer an exception to the law because it was clear Zelalem wasn't breaking the spirit of the law by wishing to play for the United States.
New Zealand should have done the same for Wynne.

Seems very harsh to be honest. If he qualifies as a New Zealander (what the hell is the demonym in NZ anyway, New Zealandish?) under Fifa's rules it should really be permitted.

Saying that, even if the law is an ass it is the law all the same. I think the games organisers should take some blame too. They should be made to verify if every participant is eligible before they participate. Same for any professional sporting competition.

I guess so. must be the only country in the world that doesn't have a proper one.

Probably one of the least interesting questions ever asked but when did the term Kiwi become common parlance? What were the people known as before that? I've got sod all to do for ten days apart from watch sport and take painkillers so I'll make it my life's work to find this out.

Barely related but I briefly was in charge of procurement of kiwis for a fruit salad company. They're incredible when they first come in to the packing facotories a day or two before they hit the shelves.

****ing hell no sleep all night and coming down off morphine and I ramble on about this ****. How long til the season starts?

I was procuring kiwis for use in fruit salads and at the time you didn't get lychees in fruit salads because they're ugly and most people don't have a clue what they are. Beautiful fruit when at their best.

A little digging suggests they're grown in Oz from October-March peaking around Xmas and the serious season where there's any real volume is only six weeks or so around Xmas.

    Yanks grow them in Summer.

Israel are synonymous with them and they're always very popular with UK Jews. I'd guess they're grown Summer there too.

China is big on them but I'd guess they consume them all. Guess your best bet is Aussie exports in December and Jan.

Apologies to anyone who read all of that. Someone pay me to do something for two weeks that I can do with a laptop. I'm cheap, bilingual and started supporting QPR as they descended into the abyss circa '94 so I'm proven resilient.

Really wouldn't surprise me if Oz don't even bother exporting as I doubt the volumes are high enough to outstrip domestic demand or there are more lucrative markets to export to in Asia.

You might live in a land completely lychee-free.

I've been here about 18 hours and I already have half a dozen close Filipino friends.

Spanish is my second. I'd say I speak it informally very well and read and write it well having lived there a year of my degree and using it ad hoc in jobs since graduating and on the odd holiday. Definitely weaker at speaking it when not physically with the person I.e. Phone calls but really that's mostly rustiness.

It's a great few days to be stuck on the couch. Cricket, golf, cricket, golf. Think there's some decent boxing this weekend too.

I was hoping it was Hindi, I'm looking to set up a business cold calling people in Bangalore.

Longshot but my brother is a Spanish - English translator, freelance based near Madrid. With the way things are over there I doubt he's got too much work to handle, but if he has and wants to sub contract a bit I'll PM you.

Went to school with plenty of bright asian lads. I'm sure one or two could do with some extra work. No idea which speak which languages but balance of probabilities someone would be up for it.

Appreciate the offer mate. Let me know, thanks.

Why are New Zealanders called kiwi?
In the early 1900s, cartoonists started to use images of the kiwi bird to represent New Zealand as a country. During the First World War, New Zealand soldiers were referred to as 'kiwis', and the nickname stuck. Eventually, the term Kiwi was attributed to all New Zealanders, who proudly embraced the moniker.
