Great advice people. I'm relatively young (27) and no family commitments.

I'm used to working stupid hours at the moment so moving to a big bank (JP Morgan) shouldn't provide any shocks.

Interesting thing is that I have already accepted and signed the offer with the small back (JP Morgan offer came in way after), so if I choose JPM, I'll have to have an awkward convo with the guys at the small bank ...

I work for a big bank Jimmy and all I can say is take the money and run. The beauty is if you play your cards right you can move to the right department and the sky is the limit. If you have a heart you can join Greez as some of the stuff we bankers do is nasty. You know what they say about bankers ..."they give you an umbrella when it is sunny and take it away as soon as the rain shows up".....

I think you should get a job with the Samaritans, with your positive outlook (demonstrated daily on here) you can't fail to reach the top of this organisation.<whistle>

Not sure about the samaritans, but at most charities if you make it to the top, you will still be pulling in a healthy 6 figure salary!

There's something to be said for working for a smaller organisation.

The larger corps tend to be full of bullshit filled preening show ponys who lack talent but make up for it with their presentation skills and Queens English. They invariably tend to get on, as they lick the right arse and come across well when it matters.

Smaller organisations don't have the same level of internal politics and people tend to judged more on their performance as opposed to their haircut.

Go with your gut, not necessarily the initial salary or the perceived scale

Totally agree with Tobes, I work for a large organisation and my only gripe is around appointments / promotions....at times these are completely bewildering.

I've seen some right melons get a leg up the ladder ahead of others who were obviously more talented, down to everything from being drinking buddies with the right suits, through to good old fashioned nepotism.

Dead boring, I sell High Voltage Electrical Equipment to the Regional Leccy Companies. Some standard distribution swgr, windfarm, solar and tidal array equipment and recently some high tech battery storage equipment.
