DRINKERS are set to get a taste of Britain's best craft beers at a new bar in Hull city centre.

Called Furley and Co after a shipping firm that once occupied its building, the Princes Dock Street venue aims to bring the perfect pint to the masses.

One of the businessmen behind the scheme is Beverley landlord Ian Allott, whose pub Chequers has won a clutch of awards since opening two years ago.

He expects customers to flock in from across the city.

Mr Allott said: "What we're trying to do is create a modern, contemporary-style bar restaurant within a three-storey Victorian quayside warehouse.

"Like Chequers, it's going to be like a revolving beer festival. It's going to be on a much grander scale.

"It will have revolving cask beers and craft beers, not just locally but from across the world."

Along with the wide variety of ale on offer, Mr Allott hopes the 3,175sq ft bar will feature a menu that changes frequently.

He stressed the venue would be "feeding the drinkers", offering high-end pub food rather than formal dining,

The landlord said: "We're going to have a kitchen in the bar so people will be able to see in and it would be great to be able to put on different chefs every week.

"We're trying to create a bit of an elementof surprise, really, so when people turn up they're not sure what they will be eating or drinking.

"But it will be good-quality and they will want to keep coming again."

Much of the Hull's nightlife is clustered around Newland and Princes avenues in the city's west.

Furley and Co is also distant from other Old Town pubs in the High Street and Scale Lane area.

But Mr Allott is confident customers will come for the atmosphere and selection on offer.

He hopes it will be the spark that starts a craft beer revolution.

He said: "We think there are thousands of people in Hull who have been at university or whatever in Leeds, Manchester and London, and they've got a thirst for craft beer.

"It's happening down Newland Avenue, but they've all got the same bottles and kegs in.

"We think if we build it, people will come, because they want what we've got to offer.

"We see this as a key part of the regeneration of central Hull."

Furley and Co is set to open in the next few months once refurbishment work is completed.

The building was let through NPS Humber.

Estates surveyor Chris Hyam said he was "delighted" to hear the new tenants intended to "invest heavily in the premises".

    Once home to maritime firm

The building set to house Ian Allott's new pub was once home to long-lived maritime firm Furley and Co.

The landlord said the business ran paddle steamers and canal boats carrying cargo across Yorkshire.

Today, his premises is owned by Hull City Council.

Although the pub will not be themed, its owners would like to include nods to its heritage.

Anyone with documents, images or memories relating to Furley and Co should email [email protected] to share them.

Lager in a plastic pint glass is the current drink of choice for most on a night out in Hull, this place might struggle.

Chequers is excellent. This place should be great. It won't be targeting lager suppers, it'll target the old town real ale crew.

Drinking establishments have improved a lot in Hull in recent years. Newland, Prinny and old town has plenty, and existing pubs have now had to up their games.

This sounds good, it sounds a little different to the ones already there, and importantly, is near to where I live! We also have the Silver Street place opening before long too.

I think Hull has many discerning drinkers looking for nice venues, I'm one of them, so I disagree with the plastic pint glass comment.

Also, I used to get my hair cut in there.

Yes, it was most recently a ladies beauty parlour :-D

I hope it does well, but in the last 10 years, any bar/cafe further down Princes Dock Street than Leonardos has failed badly.

The bar which is currently called Bar82 or something is the most recent attempt. Its been going about a year which is a good go but always seems to be empty during the day unlike everywhere the other side of Leonardos.
People currently don't go any further than the entrance to Princes Quay, unless they are going to Ask or the Marina.

They screwed up the bottom of the street building those ****ing horrible flats, there's now a massive gap between Bar82 and Ask.
