Just something I was thinking of so I thought I'd post it.

To me Oscar is an enigma I honestly have no idea to what extent I rate him (though obviously he is a good player with moments of brilliance in him). Do you guys think he has a big part to play or do we think he will be the first to lose out if a new player comes in?

A big disappointment. He has been with us long enough to fit in and understand what is needed. Yet he has become increasingly invisible, inconsistent and fails to have much impact on games anymore. Whether this is due to injury, temporary loss of form or simply not being as good as we hoped he would become, is the big question.I suggest only Jose is able to make that determination, but since you asked, I think he's just not going to be the type of player we hoped he'd become, and I would let him go if the right opportunity comes along.

Oscar does much of the 'water carrying' which is vital and many don't see as it doesn't catch the eye. I also believe Hazard is mostly at his best when both are on the pitch.

We're not going to see the Brazillian player at Chelsea as his instruction from Jose would be different who is all about the team. I assume he is doing his job satisfactorily as JM picks him more often than not.

I was reading somewhere that this will be his first between season break since he joined us so hopefully he will be fully rested and raring to go.

Oscar seems very fragile, in terms of, he seems to get tired very early every season.
By 15 games in he is blowing out of his ass. I cannot seem to make my mind up on him either. Not convinced that playing him behind the front 4 alongside Matic is his best position either.
I have seen him have good games, seen him have terrible games, haven't seen him have many excellent games.
Infact I would go so far as to say that, he is one of two regular starters I am not 100% convinced on due to their inconsistency (the other being Cahill).

He's young enough to still have major development left in him. He has moments of brilliance and does a lot of work that probably goes unnoticed. He certainly needs to be impacting games more and more regularly but he's definitely still worth keeping save for a silly PSG type offer. His position is potentially under threat if Pedro comes in though as Jose may move WIllian inside.

I agree he fades as a season progresses but hopefully with him getting a summer rest for once, this will change.

I actually think generally it's hard for any of our other attackers to stand out that much alongside Hazard!

Yeah I wouldn't sell him, except, like you say, we get a silly money offer like we did for David Luiz.
Keep him for another couple seasons and see how he turns out.

I'm in total agreement with pensioner. Oscar is just a very average player. Will do well at a small club i don't think he'll be a key top 4 player let alone a title challenger. He does everything to an okay level sprinkled with a bit of magic every now and again but for me he's not consistent enough or provide enough attacking quality. He doesn't have a killer pass or a killer shot and he's fairly light weight. The best quality he has is that he works hard which for me is not what i want in my attacking midfielder.

You mean its not ALL you want in an attacking midfielder :p
But yeah, i wouldnt cry if he left.
I think being played further back doesn't help him though

I think it's your system and style of play that makes it difficult for him to exspress himself, he has a lot of flair and skill but in your team he has to knuckle down and put the work in and doesn't get the opportunity to really show what he can do. I think a move is on the cards for him and that in a team that suits him he'll be a very attack minded player who'll get a lot of goals and assists.

    I think that's a bit harsh really.

He was a key player when we were playing so well early in the season and ultimately he was a first team regular in a team that reached the C.L semi final just over a year ago and won a title last year. He's easily good enough to be a top 4 player. Ideally we'd have a truly world class star in that position but real top level number 10's don't just grow on trees and are invariably very expensive. People are talking about 40-50 million now for De Bruyne who didn't get a sniff in our team partly because of Oscar.

He also made team of the tournament at the World Cup. This is not some average player. Jose certainly must rate him having let Mata leave for United.

Okay average is maybe a bit harsh but i rate him as just a squad player. You could replace him with a number of players and there wouldn't be a difference. If you chucked Ramires in there i don't think you'd notice a large difference. I know he got into the WC team but for me he wasn't even that good in the tournament so no idea how he made it.

He kept de bruyne out that is true but thats just Jose preferring one player to another. He didn't really give De Bruyne a chance not that i'm questions joses methods. In hindsight you could probably say we made a mistake (although would he have developed as well). I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree on Oscar.

The fact we're even having the debate I guess proves he is not where we all want him to be yet.

Just seems a little odd to me that Oscar gets criticised or questioned more than say Willian despite having a far better goals record for us for instance. Obviously there is more to it than that and I rate both players but still...

Willian i have a lot of time for. His work rate is far better and he can go past players. His long range passing is still a bit off and he lacks a bit with the final ball. Oscar on the otherhand i think is far more wasteful, loses a lot more possession probably takes about a million more shots than willian as willian is stuck out on the right (how i see it anyway).

I would love Willian next to matic and Fab where Oscar is and a new RM

I prefer Fabregas deeper myself and think he performed better there last year then at 10. It does sometimes leave us a little vulnerable though as Fabregas doesn't add too much defensively.

I'm excited about the potential Pedro signing. Looks very sensible money for an exciting and proven player who could probably play in any of them advanced midfield positions. That would give us some decent options especially as Cuadrado (so far) looks a dud signing.

Im not sure we could find a player who can press, tackle or pass like oscar.

Hes a really good player, without him or fabregas in his place the play is stunted and doesnt flow well.

Offensivley speaking, yes he needs to weigh in more decivley with goals and assists, but in terms of buid up play and defensive contribution hes the real deal to me. Young too.

I struggle to think of a name whod come in and replace him

I kind of agree with that, he's not terrible by any means and maybe the poster who said this is his first "between seasons" rest since he joined us might have a point.

We moved on from the Gerrard vs Lampard debate...

Recently I've noticed a Oscar vs Coutinho debate happening on various social media platforms. Interesting comparison - am I being biased or would you guys agree that Coutinho is far better? I found it quite astonishing that a lot of people seemed to rate Oscar more highly. Maybe that's my bias creeping in, but I do try and keep a balanced view!! Thoughts?

IMO Chelsea are too good for Oscar. Useful squad player that's probably worth keeping, but I can't see him getting much game time with the options you have.

I would certainly concede that Liverpool utilise Coutinho far better than we do Oscar.
Coutinho is a more complete player too, and I would say ahead of Oscar developmentally for their ages.
But like with the De Gea and Courtois comparison, Coutinho has HAD to step up because, and I mean this with no patronising intent, Liverpool have a much weaker team than us, and at Chelsea Oscar is perhaps able to get away with doing less.

For me, the players that give it their all every week for CFC are Terry, Ivan, Dave, Matic, Hazard, Willian and Costa.
Cahill, Oscar and Fabregas I am not too sure on.
Fab needs another season, he tailed off towards the end but historically that has been his MO every where he has been.
Cahill, world beater one week, dufus the next, hopefully Jose dumping him for Zouma for a handful of games gave him the kick up the arse he needed to bring it every week.
Oscar is a little frustrating, he gets moved around a lot though. I am unsure he has the minerals to play alongside Matic every week. I get the feeling he prefers being forward more, where Willian and Hazard play. But I am totally willing to give him another season or two.

Fair points in there. I actually quite like Oscar, I just Chelsea are too good for him to be a consistent starter. However, if he went to a team like Spurs (for example) he'd probably be their main man. I'm thinking how he'd fit into Liverpool's first 11, and due to the players we have in that position I don't even think he'd be a starter for us to be honest. He'd be battling Coutinho and Firmino for those attacking Midfield positions. Parhaps all three would work well together and we'd drop one of our more defensive options - it would certainly be an option I'd like!

I'm guessing you'd take a straight swap for Oscar and Coutinho though? I do think no matter what team Coutinho played for he would 'step up' and make the team better. He's probably our only player that would make most PL teams starting 11.

I think the debate about the 2 is simply because they're Brazilian and short!! as their game is very different - although both are often played in an advanced midfield role.
