You really have to be a nasty vindictive sadist to actually want fox hunting. If it is a case of eradicating a vermin then there are humane ways of tackling it, but we do not react in this way to any other problem do we?
I only know one person who supports it. Oddly she is an intelligent, witty, politically left leaning lady who was brought up in a rural area and has always ridden. We don't fall out over it as it is the only thing that we disagree over but she rather goes against the stereotype. She may be a sadist though, she once bit me!
It's all just a smoke screen. Get everyone angry about fox hunting so they'll forget about all the cuts to the poor. Did anyone see the speech given by Mahri Black? It was fantastic and hit every nail right on the head. Not about the fox hunting, but about the way the poorest in Scotland are being treated and how Labour and the SNP should have been working together against the Tories, not fighting between themselves and leaving the door open for the the heartless bastards! Here it is for those that haven't seen it:
Think you'll find that I said that "regardless of the views of the majority" - no way was I implying that a majority of people in Norfolk or the rest of the rural counties are in favour, just that they don't necessarily like being told what to do by people who wouldn't recognise a fox if it sat on their foot. My honest opinion is that the vast majority of people in both town and country is a solid don't really care that much. Unless you are part of a hunt or hunt supporter or quite into animal rights its not something that really enters your thoughts too often. Would I hunt - no. Do I feel strongly enough to stop others doing so - equally no it is just not something I can bring myself to care about given the rest of the issues around at the minute. Interesting point about the "free food" earlier, not something I had ever considered but I am sure you are right that it is a factor in getting the fox population up. I did see the Japanese fishermen co-existing with the bears - the whole series about the natural history of Japan was superb. Yet another top quality documentary from the BBC.
