I don't think Reed , JWP , Targett etc count as they are under 21 and you have to have 8 over 21

What's the definition of a home grown player? Fonte must be close as he was at palace before us.

I'm not fussed whether a player is from England, Germany or Mars. But it is interesting to think that over the last 12 months, we've had Clyne, Chambers, Lallana, Shaw, Lambert, Cork go out (and Morgan), and only Bertrand and Forster (and Long) come in. Just an observation, nothing more.

In terms of your point though, having 8 homegrown players only becomes an issue if we have 25 players over the age of 21 - which we almost certainly wont. The 8 can be reduced by whatever number we are below 25. So if we only have 20 players over the age of 21, then we only need 3 (being 8 less 5) homegrown players within that 20.

Arsenal wouldn't loan him here as he wouldn't be first choice

West Ham have made some good signings and kept hold of some good performers from last year.

All depends if the manager is up to task. If they do well then at least we won't be the main source of players for the top four next summer

I admire your confidence in the yet untried Soares, CJ is now a proven EPL right back who had a very good season on loan last year

Thanks for the compliment, but I don't think there is much to admire.

Soares is a 23 year old Portuguese international and without double checking I would wager has played more senior games of football than Jenkinson.
He may or may not work out, but Saints have purchased him to be first choice

It might just be me, but with all the comings and goings that have happened over the last 12 months and inevitably will do so a bit more over the remainder of the transfer window this year, but I think the biggest signing we should be aiming for is RonKo himself.

With the fact that we all know that last season was a good one and we shook off the punching above our weight tag, we know its going to be up and down over the next few seasons as we try and break through everyone elses glass ceiling. We all know player loyalty is usually related directly to £'s so the type of player we will require and we will develop need to have a good coach as a carrott.

There is part of me that sees Ron and Les forming a beautiful partnership over the next 3, 4, 5, 6 years as they develop a new generation of Southampton Youth from the Academy and they also scatter them with international class signings from across Europe.

One of those things that is nice to believe, but, I think that if Ron carries on doing well here, a big club here or abroad will be in for him. At the moment I see us as a testing ground for players and managers on the up...the good thing is that talented and ambitious people will want to join us because they have seen their predecessors do well with subsequent moves...the bad thing is that we won't keep them long. One day we will be a destination club, but not at the moment.

Totally agree, however... Much as I hate to say it, Ron was part of a good team that was developing youth at Feyenoord. He had success there and was in the CL. Koeman nonetheless saw Saints as the next step in his career, so he came here. He's man enough to see out his contract, after which I can easily see him going to a massive club (or at least another stepping stone to one - like Man Utd say, he'd probably enjoy that!)
And don't forget that, if he goes, when he came here he has brought Feyenoord's best players here in Pelle and Clasie - so any success we have in the next 2 years may follow Ron.
I don't mean to sound so negative - I think we as a club are on a massive upward trend and have achieved amazing things in a short time, and I really like Ron and have massive respect for what he's doing for us. But I'm afraid I still see us more akin to Swansea than Spurs (for example). Club first.

Don't be afraid. Swansea are a much nicer club than those 'orrible North London wannabees :)

Anyone who wants Saints to be on par with Spurs lacks ambition. :)

Another way of looking at this is that Saints are also on an upward journey. For the last 6 years the players and the managers we have had have consistently, season after season, improved our performance. When the sad day dawns when Ronald leaves us, we will be in a very strong position to attract a manager of even greater status than RK, someone who has won the Champions League or the World Cup as a coach for example. In short, who's to say we aren't also using Ron as a stepping stone?

I would love to agree with you but the draw of the London lifestyle to young multi millionaires is very hard to compete with and Spurs are definitely on the up with the massive ground developments, NFL link and potentially as massive Facebook sponsorship deal.
We will not be able to compete with them financially so will struggle on the field too
    Sad but true

I don't think we have shaken off the "punching above our weight " tag yet.
To do that we need to put together several seasons of top 6/7 places, whilst flirting with the top four, for part of those seasons.
If we start this season badly, the "punching above our weight last season" label will be in almost every match report and repeated constantly by pundits.
