That is easy: a bid made 5 minutes before the window closes is not serious

Has anyone for the club actually mentioned him as a target since the reported deadline day offer in January? Or are the fans just getting carried away over nothing again?

Similar to Barnetta and Sturridge, everyone just automatically assumes we were after them and the more people to talk about them, the more people believe is an actual FACT that the club are chasing them which always ends in dissapointment when no transfer actually happens.

The club have came out and said we were after Gameiro, i think Gervinho was mentioned, same with Marveaux and Erdinc was too.

It just seems a little strange putting all our effort into going for N'Zogbia when its probably the one position (other than in goal) that we have EASILLY covered by a number of players.

Don't get me wrong, i'd like to have them and it would give Alain Pardeaux a right headache on team selection, but it just doesnt seem to make sense. Especially if its around £9-12 million as Whelan has said he wants.

Surely, Aston Villa have to be the out and out faveourites for him since LW is a position they need filled AND theyve just been gifted £20 million for a current player. Combined with an owner who isnt afraid to spend money and a new manager who's going to want to buy his own team.

I also think its rather pointless comparing the fees of £20million Downing to what N'Zogbia 'should be worth' since he only has a year left on his contract. I can still see him going for something like £8-10 million though.

Certainly not the way a progressive club operates in the transfer market. You get your main targets in and then if you have to sit on one you'd like but are not desperate for. That way if it doesn't come off you're not bothered. We seem to leave it all to the last minute with signings we need. Let's hope it's not the case this summer. Plenty time still to get the striker and left back that are priority signings. Sure it would be nice to get a right back and sell a few, maybe a young centre midfielder to provide cover instead of Guthrie but they are not priority. If we are selling Enrique as the likes of Pardew are hinting is inevitable now, we'll need two left backs unless they intend to use Kadar/Ferguson as cover (risky for me). Haven't seen enough of Taylor to know if he is good enough to step into Enriques shoes? Of course I expect the worst, no striker and no left back, Enrique leaving, but that is just so id on't end up disappointed either way!

Not only is it not progressive, it's not possible. Even if the bid were accepted immediately, that would leave 4:59 to agree personal terms and conduct a medical. Can't be done.

I'd love to see us buy N'zogbia for around 10m because this would make competition on the wings fierce. But if im honest I would rather see the 10m put towards a really top class striker instead of paying 10m for him and say 5m on a striker if that makes sense....

In todays market how much would Adam Johnson set a team back? I personally would love him at the toon one day and heard he actually supported us as a kid....obvsiouly this would never happen coz if downing is worth 20 he must be worth 40!!!

Where did you get that from? you're not valued only on how much time is left on your contract, you're valued on a number of things, ability, age etc - contract length is a factor though for obvious reasons -i.e. N'Zogbia can be sold now or go for free next summer - so expectations on value have to be reduced. It would cost more to buy a player a club can hang onto for 5 years, compared to an identical player they can only keep for one. It's basic business.

So any valuation on N'Zogbia is not an estimation for ALL people with 12 months left. <doh>
