    Georginio Wijnaldum of PSV
Sunderland are reportedly interested in signing PSV Eindhoven captain Georginio Wijnaldum – but will have to pay just short of £15m to secure his signature.

Dutch international attacking midfielder Wijnaldum is the latest name linked to the Black Cats in the Dutch media after reports last week of interest in Feyenoord captain Jordy Clasie.

The report in Holland suggests that head coach Dick Advocaat is a big fan of the midfielder who has 19 caps to date with Netherlands and is expected to leave this summer.

Rivals Newcastle have also shown interest in the player and reports in Spain suggest Eredivisie side PSV have already rejected a £10m bid from Zenit in Russia for him.

Advocaat knows Wijnaldum, having managed him during his season in charge of PSV in 2012-13. It was the 24-year-old’s most productive season so far in which he scored 20 goals in all competitions. PSV finished runners-up that season in both the league and the cup.

Despite last season being named Dutch footballer of the year, it is understood that PSV will listen to offers in the region of £14.3m though.

Any potential move to the North East could scupper Chelsea and Manchester United’s chances of securing one of their transfer targets.

The Express are reporting that Zenit’s bid for Wijnaldum is because he is the man they want to replace Axel Witsel who could be moving to one of the English giants – but only if the Russian club find a replacement first.

Elsewhere, and with Advocaat reportedly wanting to add Premier League experience to his squad, the Northern Echo are reporting that the club are looking at the possibility of bringing Teesside-born winger Stewart Downing back to the Stadium of Light.

Downing spent a period on loan at Sunderland in 2003 and Advocaat would reportedly like to add his Premier League experience to his squad.

However, the same report says that his hometown club Middlesbrough are also interested as they look to make a statement in the window and get back to the Premier League, but the players reported £80,000-a-week wages could prove a stumbling block.

Quickly turning into this summer’s saga, the Express are reporting that Swansea City are the latest side to enter the race to sign heralded Celtic defender Virgil van Dijk.

Tottenham, Southampton, Norwich and Sunderland have all shown interest previously.

Finally, a potential outgoing from the club is Gus Poyet signing Liam Bridcutt.

Bridcutt followed Poyet from Brighton to Wearside, but it is believed that Advocaat will allow the player to leave this summer after playing just 91 minutes during the Dutchman’s nine games in charge.

Rumours on social media today suggest that Derby have tabled an offer for the Scotland midfielder.

New Derby boss Paul Clement worked with the player in the Chelsea academy and is understood to be interested in bringing him to Pride Park.

Both would improve all but a couple of teams in the league. We're also linked with Wijnaldum and I'd piss my pants if we got him.

Sunderland are NOT interested in signing Holland star Georginio Wijnaldum – but will keep an eye on the Dutch market.

The Black Cats were yesterday reported to have made an £11million bid for the PSV Eindhoven star.

But the Echo understands Sunderland have NO interest in the playmaker – though they will continue to monitor the Dutch market under boss Dick Advocaat.

While Wijnaldum won’t be coming to Wearside, Newcastle remain interested in bringing him to Tyneside this summer.

Head coach Steve McClaren and scout Graham Carr are keeping tabs on the midfielder, who skippered PSV to the Dutch title last season.

Advocaat worked with the player during the 2011-12 campaign and is a fan of the player, but talk of a huge bid for the 24-year-old is fanciful.

However, director of football Lee Congerton is keen to maximise Advocaat’s contacts and knowledge in his home country, especially with the Eredivisie represneting good value for money.

The Dutchman produced a list of transfer targets for Congerton once Sunderland had secured their place in the Premier League.

AR makes a solid point here. He was always going to go to a top European club, rather than a Premier League also-ran.

Well clearly that's true AR, as it is for almost every ambitious player who signs for either of our clubs. We either sign players who aren't good enough, players who are here for a pay day or players who are using us as a stepping stone.

If a player signed for us with actual ambitions of taking the club to the "next level" i would be very concerned about their mental wellbeing.
