I have supported the Saints for such a long time that I could not imagine being as enthusiastic about any other team. I also think my enthusiasm for football would wain. Just as it has for the England national team. I cannot think of a day when I haven't looked for any news concerning my favourite club. Whether on forces radio, newspapers, TV and more latterly Tv sports programs or internet.
You would need to get that looked at, and if still problematic, change suppliers. Oh, and I'd probably support the ref.
I've always had a soft spot for Hereford. Special footballing place for me. Very sad to hear their current plight.
Saw my ex-fiancee from 50 years ago on Facebook (my granddaughter's not mine, far too new-fangled for the likes of I), and am delighted to say that the one I traded her in for has definitely worn better! Be that as it may, you have got this in one. A mate of mine who is a Wimbledon fan just stopped going to or watching football when they moved to MK. I think I would have done the same.
That is funny Pelletron. I feel like a complete buffoon as I read that and actually thought, "I lived in Bournemouth for 5 years too; luckily it was before proper use of internet as that would have annoyed me" *interest*
I would've continued to follow Torquay Utd as they are the nearest professional club to my birthplace. But I would probably have satisfied my need for live football by going to Sholing FC's home games, I have already seen them win at the new Wembley!
My dad's team. It was something we could do to spend time together and after a couple of visits to St. Mary's I was completely hooked.
I would have lost my love for the game too. I really love the game but it's not the same when you're not really behind a particular team. You can watch the games and hope for "a decent match" but when it's Saints involved, that winning feeling can't be beaten. In St Marys on matchday surrounded by people who are entirely different from you, following different paths, yet we all have Saints in our blood. You can't just recreate that. Sure there are moments in football such as Aguero's goal that make you think wow, or teams you can support where winning is the only option, but i'd take our rise from the ashes over supporting united, liverpool or chelsea every day.
And you'd lose the excitement of making random connections. Was in Majorca in June and saw a Leihberr crane and a Sunseeker yacht. Couldn't seem to get anyone else to share my excitement though.
I'd concentrate on following the English national teams for cricket and rugby more. Would love to do a tour with Barmy Army.
I would probably attend a mix of Brighton (home town) and West Ham (mate is a season ticket holder and often has a spare ticket) games, although I wouldn't really consider myself a "fan", but I would have supported those teams. Would have made the giant SAINTS tattoo across my stomach obsolete.
I most likely would never have taken an interest in football. Southampton isn't my local club by a long shot, but it is the team I took an interest in because of a half asleep misunderstanding at one point, and long story short I ended up following games and watching when Saints were on TV, I liked the style of football and I stuck around. If Southampton didn't exist at the time though, I'd have continued the lack of interest in football in general.
Bristol City for me, local team and born and raised in Bristol so look out for their (and Rovers') results. As for football, I find myself pretty much constantly watching it, right now as an example I have Beitar Jerusalem v some team I'm not even going to attempt to spell let alone pronounce on in the background. I reckon I probably get close to watching properly about 10 games a week, and god knows how many just on in the background on bet365 streaming or whatever.
I would never have supported another team, love for Saints far too strong, but probably would have gone and watched Dag & Red or Leyton Orient as lived in the area at the time. Always look out for the Daggers now following one of the best days out I've had at an away game there with Saints a few years back.. fans knew their football too!
Interesting thread, this made me flash back many years to when my Dad took me to the old Dell and held me aloft in the old chocolate box at the Milton Road end. As a 7 or 8 year old I was totally smitten and I can almost feel the atmosphere even now, we probably lost 2 or 3 nill [we did that a lot in those days] but from that day on there was only one team for me. Big part of all our lives I suspect?
