For me there was very little difference to most of the previous races. Admittedly Williams made the first stint interesting by not allowing the coordinated Mercs to drive off on their own. For all the criticism Nico receives for not being able to challenge his team mate on track, Lewis posed no obvious threat to the Williams pair, but he obviously knew that not being compromised by strategy (like the 2nd placed Merc often is) he could pass through the pitstop - which he duly did. I would imagine for most, the race appeared to have ended at this point until the weather had its say. Its a shame that weather went that little bit too far and robbed us of a grand stand finish between two drivers in equal machinery. Ultimately without the poor starts of the Mercs and 5 minutes of weather madness where fortune played its part, this would likely have been another uneventful procession. We must however be thankful for any excitement due to its rarity.
It was a few things I think that spoiled it, the start promised a race at the front for a change, sadly it didn't really turn out that way, the huge wipe-out at the back ended the chance for some decent mid-pack action which usually saves the race for me, (bar Monaco of course, which can't be saved in my eyes) and most of the overtaking action happened in the pits. It's a shame Williams didn't 'blink' when Mercedes tried the fake pit-stop, it would've really backfired if Bottas had pitted and got the undercut. Canada got slated for being a bad race, but it was a far better spectacle imo.
They were more or less running nose to tail so Rosberg either had the choice to being stacked behind Hamilton or having to wait an extra lap as Hamilton would have first dibs on the better strategy.
As BLS has said the second Merc ( Whoever it maybe) defers to the lead driver on strategy and Is Unable to undercut the other driver - Lewis had that luxury over the Williams pair. Apologies if you view that as a slight against Lewis.
Ok, I fully understand now...and NO I dont think it was a slight against anybody, I just wanted an explanation. What I would say though is if the rain hadn't appeared the race would have been over long before. Once Lewis got the undercut on the Williams he was pulling away at a very swift rate, but Rosberg was in the dirty air so he got stuck behind them. I think a lot of people didnt give Mercedes enough credit for getting a car in front and for once dictating the strategy, unlike what they were doing with Ferrari in previous races where Ferrari were dictating the races for them. Yet they were letting Williams dictate at first by telling Lewis to do the opposite of what Williams were doing. They still need to grab the bull by the horn or should I say (the star by the point) They need to force their competitors to change strategy not just react to others. By the way Smithers I am not blind to facts and reality, even though I like Lewis' racing style (and I don't have to make any apologies for that) doesn't mean he is some God to me, don't get it twisted. What I am going to say is that I am not going to be hypocritical about it. I enjoy drivers with a racing spirit, if drivers just want to sit behind and hope for the man in front to crash or something then racing would have to get a new name I think. Oh and I thought Mercedes strategists were bad until I saw Williams at work.
