'World's biggest' fish and chip shop to open in Willerby alongside museum please log in to view this image THE world's biggest fish and chip restaurant is set to open in Willerby – alongside a museum about the UK's favourite dish. The new Papa's Fish And Chips Restaurant is being fitted out on the site of Woody's Bar And Grill in Great Gutter Lane East. It will be the flagship venue in a chain of about 15 restaurants nationwide. Owner Sid Papas bought the site for £1m and is spending another £250,000 on refurbishment work. Mr Papas said: "It's going to be quite a big deal, hopefully, and people should be coming to the museum from miles around. "With Hull being UK City of Culture 2017, and with it being a historic fishing port, it just made sense for it to have the biggest restaurant as well. The museum will look amazing." Opening at the end of the month, the 280-seater restaurant will have a focus on traditional battered fish and chips, but there will also be prawns, mussels and grilled seafood on offer. Famous Hull patties will also be sold. Although a Harry Ramsden's fish and chip shop in Bournemouth has more seats, Mr Papas said his near-10,000sq ft restaurant would be the world's largest by floor space. The Papa's Fish And Chips chain was founded in 1966 in Margate, Kent, and is still owned by the family. It produces batter to a "secret" recipe developed in 1973 and says it uses only regional produce and sustainable fish. Despite this being the firm's first venture in East Yorkshire, Mr Papas said he was confident he would be able to take on more established regional rivals. "Over the years, Hull has had some good fish and chip shops but none that are really great, and no really good fish restaurants," said Mr Papas. "Fish and chips are quite expensive in Hull compared with what we will be charging – it's a higher quality but it's for everybody. Woody's staff of about 25 will be offered jobs in the new restaurant, Mr Papas said. He also hopes to employ another ten people when the restaurant opens. He said the museum would feature a traditional chip shop to give guests an insight into the origins of the trade. The owner said: "It's really authentic. "The conversion work is being done as we speak." http://www.hulldailymail.co.uk/Worl...tory-26851432-detail/story.html#ixzz3fHmaBdZa
"Over the years, Hull has had some good fish and chip shops but none that are really great" Clueless twat.
Whiteheads Hornsea, thats the only place to go for fish and chip, nothing else touches it This place will be lucky to last 24mths
A few of my friends work there and I know the owner quite well, trust me, hes done his market research, it's going to be awesome. He's fully aware of the uphill struggle he faces with regards to the area and he's right, there are some good fish and chip shops in that area, but none of them are outstanding. Syd is far from clueless, he's won several awards for his fish and chips and his restaurants tend to do well.
Good look to him, but his first mistake was choosing that location, he's fighting an uphill battle from the off.
It will be interesting to see how it goes, Tim Rose was involved in opening a fish and chip restaurant in the same area about 25 years ago, which the last time I went passed was then a McDonalds and it didn't do very well.
What he should have said: "Hull has some great fish n chip shops but my new restaurant will give people a whole new fish and chip dining experience". Also he's wrong when he states Hull is expensive for fish & chips. Portions here are larger then most areas yet are around the same price. Hull is actually cheap when compared portion size for portion size.
I see there is a new Chippy resturant opening on Prinny Ave, cant see that working.. Id be opening a Yo!! Sushi Bar down there, it would be packed
I noticed that yesterday, I thought they'd done a decent job on the frontage and the branding, though you can't see in yet.
