Business is always shady or grey as they like to call it.
Well yeah. We played the Game of Thrones. We may win, we may die.

But if we don't make the signing and DTLW's speculation is correct then I think we need to steer clear of ethical or moral arguments.

It will be done this week I bet, so we haven't got long to wait.

No, but trying to take advantage of another party's clear oversight would be pretty shady behaviour and doesn't fit with the comments on here about Southampton acting ethically or in a morally correct way. Seems to me we tried to play Atletico and as a result may have got played ourselves.

Of course, if we sign Alderweireld none of this will matter.

The date was put in the contract so there would be a deadline...essential when trying to get players in during a transfer window. So we have been left thinking we might get Toby as AM haven't bought out the contract...so we now want our player as we have been pissed about. Which is the most likely: Saints have sat there crossing their fingers that AM have cocked up or AM have played both sides against the middle and have kept us hanging around whilst they courted other teams. I know which one I see as most likely and I see no reason to let them off the hook and say don't worry about it.

Well we don't know what happened. DTLW said

I'd imagine Saints were sitting quietly because they knew AM were sleep-walking into losing Toby for £6.8m by failing to know the details of the agreement they'd signed.

and my point is that if that's what happened then Saints have acted in a somewhat questionable manner and can't play the moral/ethical behaviour card.

I don't think for one minute that Saints planned this, but were hardly likely to point it out as the time got closer. Have no problem with that at all. This isn't a church supper. The small print was not hidden from AM...I reckon they just thought they'd pay out of the money they received and dithered around.

That makes no sense whatsoever. Expecting the other party to respect the terms of a contract is hardly questionable, for crying out loud!
I'm repeating myself now but if Atletico made it clear they wanted to break the agreed fee clause and we sat back, hoping they'd forget to make the payment and hoping to take advantage of an oversight on their part and screw them on a technicality then that's sharp practice. Not technically or legally wrong but still pretty questionable behaviour from an ethical or moral viewpoint.

Yes, we are a bunch of crooks and wide boys who look to con people all the time. Les even turns his phone off sometimes to avoid calls. It's true.
