I can see what you're doing, PISKIE. You're trying to rile me by suggesting that I put my beloved Spurs second behind a money club. I have had the discuss with my fellow Spurs fans, and I am one of the few who would have no problem with us being bought out by a rich Arab. I think that's the way that the Prem - and all of Europe's elite clubs - will have to go, to keep pressing for excellence. The current model cannot be sustained if we are to have a level playing field. But, until that day arrives, I take great pride in the fact that lowly Spurs can mix it with the big boys, and bloody their noses, occasionally, as Arsenal, Chelsea, and United, all found out, to their cost, in past seasons. I even have a grudging respect for 'Pool, that they are surviving in such a hostile financial cesspit, such as the Prem.

But I do agree with you that the oil money has skewed the whole picture and as much as it is entertaining to see Spurs fail after spending so much on transfers, I do think they've done a decent job of staying in the top 6 given their resources. Levy is a hard nosed businessman and that's to his credit, but when it comes to the footballing side of things, this is where he is weak. His managerial appointments and decisions on reinvesting money from sales demonstrate that he wouldn't survive at a top club.
Spurs struggle to get a top manager due to Levy sacking everyone after 9 months ! If he had more patience then Spurs would get a decent manager that then could make Spurs a top 4 side possibly. Only Chelsea and City have had sugar daddy money so far. United Liverpool Spurs and Arsenal have billionaire owners but the clubs are self sufficient so are other Prem teams. He sacked Jol after he'd begun to build a decent head of steam at Spurs and he dispensed with Harry after he'd got you in the top 4 and playing some exciting football. Levy has ideas above his station. He assumes that Spurs should be mixing it with the big boys like Arsenal and shifts the blame onto the manager when it doesn't work out. Harry Redknapp was right, Spurs have gone downhill since Levy got rid of him.
Poch is more switched on than Harry was, and I think Levy has confidence in that. This season is going to be a make-or-break season for him. If he can maintain 5th spot, I think he'll be safe. Obviously, I'd like to see us push on and finish in the top 4, like we've done twice in recent times, but it's a massive task, given the competition. Arsenal are still on the periphery of making it big. I see them, 'Pool and us as all vying for that last top 4 spot.
You have finished in top 4 twice in last 20 years isn't it ? i see Spurs and Pool vying for 5th and 6th - albeit 10 or more points adrift of the 4th place team - which is about the level the should be as they are better than the rest but not as good as the best, which is Chelsea City Arsenal and United
The gap between the top 4 and the rest is growing and teams like Spurs are now being challenged by the likes of Southampton.
What is for certain is that Arsenal would be a better run club under levy. From their self-proclaimed best-run club in Europe, arsenal have fallen behind Bayern and now Chelsea and City in commercial revenue. The club mistakenly believed that a bigger stadium and FFP would deliver them success and took their eye off the crucial earner: commercial revenue. Another big failure for the specialists
Abramovich was interested in buying Spurs before he eventually bought Chelsea, so if things were different you could have had that wish come true a long time ago and Chelsea would likely still be a mid table nothing club. Personally, I would hate to see Arsenal bought out by a rich owner who simply bought success in the way that Chelsea and City have done. In fact Arsenal have resisted that very approach from Usmanov and we have bucked the trend for the big clubs, by earning what we spend and challenging on our own merit. Arsenal are now in a position where we can begin to challenge the Oil clubs and buy the players that only they could once afford, and we've done it without needing to bend over for a foreign sugar daddy. Two trophies in two years is vindication of our approach and we are strengthening all the time. The Chavs success will always be remembered for being artificially engineered, not earned by their own hard work. If I were a Spurs fan, tempting whilst it would be to be bought out (and let's be honest it might be the only way you could challenge the top clubs) but would you really be happy with the hollow success that buying trophies brings ?
This one belongs in the football myths thread. In the PL era they have outspent United, Spurs and Arsenal. This seems to have gone under the radar as 90% of it was spent on ****e, and of course a good chunk on strengthening Saints squad.
