It sort of sounds like we have deliberately not been talking with AM as to not remind them about paying us off. But because we haven't been talking to AM we didn't know what was going on with Spurs. We assumed that there was nothing going on because otherwise they would have paid us. Naive perhaps but then this is all supposition.

And football is football, a very unique market where contracts really don't carry as much weight as they do elsewhere.

It's still a agreement between two clubs in words isn't it? Why would we think AM would go against it?

    Agreed.

I also don't see how it would be corrupt to offer to pay Atletico more than we have to.

It's certainly less morally questionable than keeping quiet about the payment deadline and hoping Atletico miss it.

Player contracts are different then contracts between clubs. Player contracts you get compo from selling the player. What do you get from a agreement between two clubs if one club goes against that agreement?

I'm guessing we'll get some indication as to our chances at half two.

If we take it to court then we may get compensation, but unlikely that it will be a significant amount. Whatever, if anything, we get through the legal route, I highly doubt any of us would take that over paying 12m for Toby.

To me this will come down to the norm in football now. PLAYER POWER. If Toby wants to join us, then he will and AM will have to deal at the agreed contract of last season. However if Toby wants to join Spuds, then HE WILL, and we will have to negotiate with AM a compensation payment or breaking of a contract. That's it.

What if AM had already accepted a bid of Spurs. We said we would match it, but AM said the deal is basically done. We have no idea do we?

What I am getting at is blaming Saints for what they may have done or not done (speculation) is harsh. The only thing we know is AM went against a written contract.

Good response, can't believe how many people want us to spend over the top without any good cause,I read somewhere (else I think) that it's only a couple of million - loose change these days. After our admin you would have thought more people would think before saying I want it and I want it now.
Personally I am more than happy to see our club play it as hard as they can and if we get him brilliant,if we dont so be it.
But don't waste money under any circumstance.(deliberately forgetting osvaldo)

A Spurs supporting manager in my work said that Alderweireld is already in London for a medical? Could just be regurgitated from an uncredible media outlet.

Exactly, we really don't know what's gone on. I'm just stating my opinion that saints are partly at fault, but only IF the case is that we refused to bid higher due to the contract even at the very real risk of losing him. This may not be the case whatsoever. I'm merely speculating, as is everyone else it seems at this stage.

It wouldn't surprise me if we have insisted on AM honouring a contract and not haggling and whatever the short term inconvenience of this, I am content that our club is run properly.
Think about how the club dealt with the wantaways last year, how they dealt with Morgan. I want Toby to sign for us, who wouldn't? We will have to see when this all comes out in the wash.

If we (the club) knew, for absolute certainty, that there was no need for us to go above £6.8m, then I am completely fine with us not going above. Why spend a penny more when you legally do not have to?

At the same though, I'm not at all completely fine with us going down the legal route - unless of course the end result is that we get Toby! I don't care whether or not we have a legal leg to stand on, because fans and the media will not care either. If we do not get Toby, then am I sure that this will only end up with egg on our faces. So many people will see this as sour grapes or us spitting our dummy out of our mouth. Even if actually it's not the case, and we were well within our rights to take legal action. We've built up a lot of goodwill over the past couple of years; neutral fans wanting to see us do well etc. It would be sad to damage that in any way.

Not the biggest PR disaster in the world, I grant you. But still something I'd have preferred we avoided (again, unless we have strongly believe that taking such action will get us Toby). It wouldn't be worth it just to get a few quid in compensation, or to make a stand.

Basically if Spurs get Toby for £11m then we have ****ed up especially if there is no legal action against AM. At this point in negotioations i'm prepared to trust the Saint's management and see what happens that view may well change once the dust settles.

Entertain the thought that Alderweireld goes to Spurs or even signs for us but goes on to have an absolute shocker next season - after all this lol.

Think he will go to Spurs though.
