    Pretty sure they did the same thing when Schneiderlin was "close" to joining Man United, and yet he's still with us for now. It won't be the fee that's the issue, as mnay have said, it will be wages. We could offer Toby £70k a week, but Spurs could offer well over £100k.

    Just remember Sky bet suspended betting on Schneiderlin too and we Hadn't even received a bid!

    I appreciate this - but gutted nevertheless that we cannot compete for such a critical signing - I also appreciate wage caps, setting precedents for current and potential players etc, but a player of his calibre, IMO, is critical to our aspirations.

    All I see is one team playing this out in the press, and one team keeping their counsel.

    Now it may not ultimately work out for us, but I'd prefer to play things the way we are.

    How are we 'playing this out in the press'?

    There's been nothing official from Spurs themselves. Everything you've read is either from people claiming to be ITK or the media.

    Even you must have noticed how every transfer involving Spurs is played out like a hideous soap opera

    Our transfers are quite protracted though normally the media get involved before much actually happens.

    Whatever - if he comes to us, then great. I'm sure you'll all give him a lovely reception :p

    This isn't just about getting or missing out on a player. It's about the ability to compete with a direct rival over a player who has publicly said he would like to stay at saints. Sure there will be other targets that we are tracking, but Toby is settled, proven and the sort of player we NEED if we are to compete and qualify for European competitions regularly.

    You'd hope that Toby would want to join, said so all of last season. Hopefully he has his head on straight. Spurs are a rival in league position for sure, but in terms of finances, they're quite a way ahead of us.
