He went on live TV, spouted a load of lies and drivel and expected us to believe him. Some did, I did not, and seems I was, for once, absolutely ****ingcorrect not to. Tiny takethepiss bids put in for sub standard players. Normal service has been resumed i fear!!!

Being fair, everyone before the game had a chuckle about it, there was nobody taking that **** seriously. Either he's completely deluded, absolutely cynical in his attempts to obtain money from fans, or he's genuine...

In order to be genuine, Mike Ashley would have to care about this football club, and he doesn't. It's not a crime. I own a hoover and I don't give a **** about it.

Just means it one of the other two reasons.

Too early to judge. Perhaps the improved coaching staff want to see who has got something about them?
Maybe we are working behind the scenes and keeping quiet.
Whinge if the season starts and team is sub standard

I regarded Ashley's statement that he was going to continue to invest in players and in the club as odd.

I regarded the speech as an indication that he was aware that a significant degree of investment was required to avoid relegation. I did not regard it as indicating an intention to do more than comfortably avoid relegation and, if it did not prove inconvenient to do so, field a reasonable strength team in cup competitions.

I regarded reading more into the speech than the above as:
    a. not justified by the words used in the speech; and
    b. evidence that hope springs eternal in the Geordie breast.

I continue to regard the speech as I did initially. I expect a degree of investment sufficient to allow us to comfortably avoid relegation will be made.

I'll judge when then window closes.
We could have easily signed 3-4 players in the £3m bracket but we are a bit more ambitious than that. I honestly think we'll get a few really decent players in.

As before and as some have said I'm not bothered as to how much we spend, I am simply concerned about who we buy. Final judgement needs to be reserved for the end of the window but I would hope that some significant steps are taken at least by the start of the season.

The most lucid and accurate I have seen from you. His phrase "let's bolt the horse to the cart" can be taken to mean little more than taking McClaren on. I don't know, we could read a thousand ways into his little speech. A cart-horse is not exactly an exciting animal. He said "continue to invest" which was the most unerring thing. In truth, none of it matters. They will invest what they feel they need to in order to avoid relegation. They will not and never will be rushed, they'll do it on their terms. Sometimes they'll get lucky, sometimes they won't. One thing I do know is that nothing is certain with this club.

At what point does this negativity stop? If Matip (10m), Austin (15m) and Thauvin (10m) all rock up next week with the promise of two more would that suffice?

I'm not saying they're the players we'll sign, just that we'll get what we need. If things hadn't changed why weren't Carver and Stone kept on the payroll as assistants and compensation saved? Why wouldn't we have signed two/three unknowns for 5m apiece?

We're after a better class of player IMO which is why deals are taking longer.

The negative stuff will never end. Ever.
We could do the treble and half the fans would complain we concede too many goals along the way.

    Correct.

In fact he has said pretty much the same thing before. When Keegan returned he said in an interview or a press conference or something that he had asked Ashley what his ambitions were and that Ashley had said "to win something" ................ so if his blueprint to "win something" remains the same as it has been since Keegan was here, then expect more of the same penny pinching, barrel scraping bullshit that we have had thus far.

I still maintain the interview was more about his own vanity than it was about his ambition for the club. I can see no other reason for conducting such a interview with, clearly pre set questions from that **** licker Craig. Mid table mediocrity is the very best that we can hope for. A flukey cup run would be just that, a fluke. Ashley will be happy to ride the EPL gravy train for a good few years yet laying out the bare minimum in cash and gambling that we can survive. The only difference may be that it is more a calculated gamble this time with slightly more cash on the table, but not much more.

A wholesale clearout of Penfold, Carver etc and a downgrading of Carr's duties to scout and only scout would have shown serious intent. Instead he makes a statement that it is the "footballing board" that signs players and then promptly removes himself from said board. That's a guy taking even less interest in the club, not more.............. or somebody distancing himself from what he knows is coming............. more of the same.

As Mrtiote says....he never said anything would be different

I regard the same way as I did then, with a good degree of cynicism.

That is just common sense based on what we have seen over his tenure. I don't see the point in getting worked up or being overly negative, or overly positive. It is what it is and time will tell us what the plan is. I imagine it will be centred around finishing in mid table.

Obviously when you mention winning things or qualifying for the CL, punching way above your weight financially, then you are clearly talking about a massive amount of investment. However there is any number of get out clauses he can apply as he always does. He could say he didn't say how long that was going to take. He could mean he was staying for 20 years <laugh>

This guy has a closing down sale on a yearly basis, then moves round the corner so I wouldn't go believing his words, and the getting upset calling him a liar. We already know he talks a load of ****e and his deeds don't match the product description. Why still keep moaning about it? It isn't going to change so its better just to relax and see what happens. Anything good is a bonus.

Clearly we are behind where you'd like to be if you were gonna back up your grand statements if you believing him. Perhaps they are daft enough to think our squad is already top half quality? More likely the next 5 year plan is in operation
