Pedantry moment (correcting the heading on the YouTube clip): West Germany, not Germany.

England played so well that day. Galling - especially as Argentina were no great shakes that year.

Mcgregor repeated Shiltons trick there in the Cup Final for us. If Gascoigne had managed to keep his head for the whole match and extra-time I think we would have got a winning goal, unfortunately after the booking he went cuckoo and has been ever since so it's probably his 25th anniversary of being completely mental too

Nothing else happened today, I can assure you. Just this World Cup Semi Final and the end of meat rationing.

If it makes you feel better the vast majority of people in the colonies were actually loyalists. The Revolution had nothing to do with freedom, taxes, or voting. It was a rebellion orchestrated by rich merchants and American aristocrats who wanted more power for themselves and wanted to avoid taxes to the crown which only the richest Americans were paying. Taxes, control, oppression, etc all went up after the revolution not down. It is one of the great ironies that we listen to the propaganda of the people leading the fight instead of looking at what occurred before, during and after.

Good post. The American Revolution, just like the October Revolution in Russia, was a minority revolution. The Patriots and the Bolsheviks were nothing more than a significant minority but they used propaganda to make it look like they had the entire population on their side; they definitely didn't.

Some still think it was about taxes. <laugh>

Yes, but he quite clearly said in his post that the vast majority of the population in the Thirteen Colonies at the time were Loyalists; hence, they would have viewed Britain as their county and not an independent America.

It's been more than a few years since my 400 level American revolutionary political classes but from what I remember it's estimated that around 75% were loyalists. The % by demographic is where you see that those with power, money, influence and education were staunch patriots.

Using a modern term what they really probably saw themselves as was an autonomous region of Brtian. As one can still want separation without complete independence.

The best tax anyalisis would be one that showed it just after the revolution and it would show higher taxes afterwards.

Don't get me wrong in hindsight I still think the rebellion was the proper thing but one (well mainly us here in the U.S.) should have a better understanding of what caused the fight and the repercussions that occurred afterwards. It also can bring up philosophical questions that at times can conflict with your political leanings, such discussions would be great, instead what happens is people blow up fireworks, get drunk and like my neighbors are doing now shoot automatic weapons in the air with no understanding of what the 4th really meant for us or the world.

Had the revolution not occurred, the US would probably be in a similar situation to Canada and Australia. By that I mean a fully independent constitutional monarchy and a member of the Commonwealth of Nations. Without the revolution, it's possible the Thirteen Colonies wouldn't have expanded westwards and annexed the Spanish and French possessions. The American Revolution was very important and was more than just merely overthrowing a government as it set a precedent for important values and principles enshrined in the Constitution. However, the Founding Fathers were little more than oligarchs in practice and not that different to Britain's aristocracy.

More than just Oligarchs in practice of course, there was a BBC article a few days ago that was on our media outlets as well about a study done at a university here proving that the U.S. is and has been for a long time a not a democracy but instead a corporate controlled oligarchy.
