Well I'm blowed. Is goal line technology being used.? Would be incredible that the international events that prompted the introduction of the technology in World tournaments, if there was any doubt, goal line technology would prove the goal stood.

Ha, but even still, what a heartbreaking loss and a horrible way to lose.

    That was a real heartbreaker.

It is tough playing Japan because all of their players are so skilled on the ball. In a close game, they gives them just that tiny extra edge even despite the fact that they did not play that well today, and England looked the better team for large portions. Doubly unfortunate in that it was an own goal. But you can't blame Bassett there. That was a dangerous ball in, and Japan had numbers in the box. She had to make a tough choice and she missed the clearance by a matter of inches.

Hard to say Japan doesn't deserve the berth for their usually appealing style of play and general performance throughout the tournament. But on this game, England deserved it as well. What else can you say? They played great, and they gave it everything they had. A couple of bounces go their way and it would have been a different story. They represented their country and just as importantly their sport well, and I think games like this (despite some dodgy officiating) go a long way towards growing the popularity of women's football and really football in general.

And if you have to lose, then losing to Japan is the least painful way to go out. They play an attractive brand of football and are just an appealing side to watch when they aren't playing your country. And it breaks up the US-Germany-Europe hegemony, so that's good too. I felt that way when the US lost to them in 2011, and I will feel that if we lose to them this time around, too.

We were unlucky (hit the cross bar twice) but there was an air of desperation about our defending when ever Japan threatened. I'm not sure we would have with stood ET.

We're in the next round soon, so they have to get a move on.

While at work I heard Quinny on talkSport [I'm not in charge of it] telling someone he'd just seen Chelsea playing head tennis into a bin, and how wonderful it all was. He singularly failed to acknowledge that he found them doing it through this BBC Sport headline [far too much of a coincidence for it not to be through this new link as they did it back in April] as St Johnstone players trump everyone else with their head tennis display.

    "Quinny" is a knob.

*non-Saints related stories.... I used to drive Quinny to Cowplain social club for about 3 months most days around lunchtime, just after her finished training*

I wholeheartedly agree. The perfect description. He is a knob. He has a nickname that is knobbish, and he has the opinions of a knob. In fact, he's so much of a knob he'd make a very good implement for opening and closing interior doors. I put him sligtly more knobbish than Alan Brazil and he's an enormous knob. Bearing in mind, of course, that they are all knobs on talkSport. Except for Paul Hawkesbee. He's actually quite talented.

Underneath them all, a fraction below the knob Quinny, are Ant & Dec. But they aren't on talkSport so don't count here. I just included them for perspective.

Exactly my view of TalkSport people, including the positive mention of Hawkesbee and a minor mention for Jacobs, but I think that's just because he's with PH.
