Ain't that the truth for pretty much all modern technology. We're becoming further and further removed from the real, 3-D world.

I told someone the other day that we are turning the evolution circle... remember the picture we all know of the evolution of man from apes and curved backs to upright backs? ... Well, how long until we have an exaggerated curves at the neck and top of the spine from too much time hunched over hand held devices?

My brother worked at Portals until they shut the mill down, the redundancy payouts were amazing. One chap had worked there for 50 years, so he did very nicely!

Tell the stories then FLT. The one toy from my childhood that I missed was my Scalextric. So much so that when I sold it all in NZ [got around NZ$400] in the early 1990's and eventually came back to GB I always slightly regretted it. Then someone I vaguely knew said they were throwing their old Scalextric out and I grabbed it. It's tiny compared to the huge amount of track I had before, but it's a start. Even has racing sidecars.

The keyboard player from The Cure has a giant Scalextric track at his home. He's as yet unbeaten on it too. He promised that if I ever beat him, I could take his Ferrari 458 Speciale out for a spin....

    .....I'm still practising....

I have just recently packed mine up. My loft is boarded for one reason and one reason only - Scalextric. The wife thought it was for storage until I "allowed" her a small space at the end for storage. The track was almost permanently out in the loft and will be again once the re-wiring is done. I have some of my old stuff, but I also have invested about 12 years ago via Ebay. I got the bug again and started going for it and so I have a load of gear, including side cars, caravans, trucks and ....

    ...wait for it...

    ...Scalextric motor bikes :)

Let me at it. Give me half an hour practice on his circuit. A few years ago (say 8-10) my Dad would organize Scalextric evening sat a Barn near Liphook. Fantastic evenings and I still have the medals :)

All round FLT's place then soon, eh? Scalextric - my dad couldn't afford it, so I got a cheap copy. Couldn't keep the cars on the track for more than half a lap and then they got all fluffed up in their contact points (sounds like an adult movie - or is it just my warped mind?) and stopped. So I never played with it much - would love to have a go!!

You'd have to go to deepest Devon for it. Mind you, you could drive back in the Speciale.

Hopefully. Let's see when the draw is done in a couple of weeks. 30th July or 6th August on Thursday nights.

Val Doonican has died. I'm not sure that I enjoyed watching him as a youngster, but he certainly was a part of my childhood on a Saturday evening. RIP the cardigan/jumpers
