I have a son who, although a football nut, is a better hockey player and is getting more and more into hockey. We saw that yesterday and a great result.

I am also dreading the day he starts playing hockey for one of the men's sides on a Saturday afternoon and the season ticket stops :(

Here was my initial, unknowledgeable, simplified, "stupid" thought last night when watching the news:

The reporter said that one of the key issues is the growing and emerging economies and that we need flights to/from there. Could we not be considering shuffling some of the not so key flight destinations from Heathrow out to other airports and open space for these destinations at Heathrow? Can any of the other airports be expanded? There is HS2 being built for better train links, so does that make London more accessible from Birmingham airport?

Is one if the problems that the British Airports compete with one another under different aviation authorities/companies and so don't work together well enough? I don't know, this is a question from the stupid box.

*comment based on no knowledge of this sector really and I'm sure plenty of people better positioned (Pie) to point out something I've overlooked :)

As long as you don't get any bunting out for that one! Could be a horror show :(

I was walking the cliffs above Whale Chine yesterday and a Spitfire flew overhead...felt for a moment like I'd gone back in time. Was delighted to have seen one of the few left flying.

Well said, Fran - these guys and ladies give up an enormous amount to play for their country and are proud to do so (unlike certain footballers). I was privileged to see my daughter play for GB in the inline hockey world cup in Alberta back in 2003 and it was amazing to see how much all the teams had put in in terms of time and money (no funding there - unlike Canada and the US, who won). Proud to say the women, at least, did their country proud - my Em now has her name on the "international honours board" at her old school, next to one Tim Rodber :emoticon-0100-smile

I salute anyone who plays for their country, in any sport, even tiddlywinks ..................

A couple of years ago the Red Arrows put on a display at the IOW Pop festival (which is near my house). Sat in garden and had my own personal display. :)

It`s very nice - set in a restored paper mill that used to make the paper for bank notes for the BoE.

Hockey is my blind spot. I just don't like it at all, for absolutely no good reason I can think of.

Never understood why Manston hasn't been considered. If Eurostar can get from London to Ashford in 40 mins, Manston would be about 50 mins with the same type of line. It's right on the end of Kent so most of the aircraft noise would be over the sea. It's also a reasonably depressed area so the jobs would be welcome. It has, IIRC, the longest runway in the UK. It's surrounded by farmland rather than houses and industrial estates so expansion would be easier in future.

I used to drive passed that twice a month on my way to Margate/Ramsgate to see customers (notably Scalextric, 20 years ago) and they'd have to remove the smell of cabbages or it could put visitors off :)

*boy, meetings at Scalextric for a 20 something year old were fantastic - especially if they let us in the development show room!!

Give her another chance and then she can talk to my lad about playing Hockey for England/GB - he'd be impressed.

Ps. Right to be proud :)

I got a Walkman...never really used it as I thought who'd be daft enough to wear earphones whilst outside so that you miss out on the normal sounds of life and might walk under a bus. Still feel that.
